Call on Canada to End the Seal Massacre

Please help to stop the slaughter of baby seals by writing letters and signing petitions – details and links further down.

Right now seals are being killed in the commercial hunt in Canada.

The Canadian seal hunt is a massacre of helpless animals. It’s gone on far too long, it’s cruel and it has to stop.

Warning: Horrific images

This year I really thought this awful massacre had not occurred, that finally this atrocity was consigned to history where it belongs. So many people worldwide boycott seal products including bans from the EU and Russia. The market for seal products is diminishing to virtually nothing yet the Canadian government refuses to ban this shocking cruelty, such cruelty to defenceless animals is not worthy of a country such as Canada.

People around the world continue to speak out against the seal massacre and boycott seal products, yet the Canadian government stubbornly endeavours to try to sell these products of cruelty. They continue to fight the European Union’s ban at the World Trade Organisation and overturn the Russian Federation’s ban on imported seal products. In 2011 the Russian Federation banned the importation of seal products. Russia is the largest importer, importing 95% of finished seal products, therefore there is hardly any market remaining. Yet the slaughter of these helpless animals continues as Canada refuses to ban this abhorrent inhumane practice.

Last year, 88,573 innocent baby seals were reported clubbed or shot – many as young as 21 days old. They were killed for products no one wants or needs. Last year, the sealers admitted dumping 6,000 pelts into the ocean because there were no markets for them.

You can help end the seal hunt once and for all.

Seal pups lie defenceless on the ice as hunters approach. But even the fastest pups are no match for men with clubs or rifles. The pups die in agony.

The seal hunt has a long history, but it’s a relic of the past. Rather than determine a plan to help sealers transition out of this failing industry, the Canadian government has thrown away over $50 million in tax dollars since 1996 trying to prop up the industry.

There’s no reason for this merciless slaughter to continue.

The fight to protect seals is more urgent than ever. Ask the Canadian government to end commercial sealing.

Thank you for caring about the animals.

A new bill (Bill C-555) is being proposed by Conservative MP Grey Kerry in November 2013 will make it illegal for anyone to observe the commercial seal slaughter in Atlantic Canada. The bill “seeks to increase the distance that unauthorized persons or ‘unlicensed observers’ must maintain from seal harvesters” from half a mile to a full mile. The bill is reminiscent of the infamous Ag-Gag laws in the United States which makes it illegal to document and share images of factory farming. According to Kerry the purpose of the bill will be to “protect sealers and hunt observers, show support for the commercial seal hunt, and ensure that seal harvesters can go about their job ‘without fear of disruption.’”

An Introduction to the Canadian Seal Hunt

“Harp seal pups are famous for their big black eyes and fluffy white fur. These are their trademarks in their first two weeks of life. But these beautiful and gentle creatures have the unfortunate status of annually suffering the largest slaughter of any marine mammal species on the planet (with the exception of a few years in which the Namibian Cape fur seal massacre took more lives.).

Every spring, great numbers of pregnant harp seals gather together on the stark ice floes off the Canadian Atlantic coastline of Newfoundland and Labrador and in the Gulf of St. Lawrence to the east of Quebec to give birth to their babies”

It’s time for Canada to stop this barbaric behaviour, such shocking cruelty is not acceptable for any civilised country. The world is shocked by such horrific brutality to defenceless animals. It is time for the Canadian government to do the right thing. For many years I have signed petitions and written letters, as have thousands of people worldwide yet either nothing anyone says makes the Canadian see the abhorrent cruelty of the seal hunt, the senseless slaughter of innocent animals, or they simply don’t give a damn.

The assault on the other species with which we share this word is relentless. As a vegan I deplore the killing of any living creature. The massacre of these helpless seals is sadly not the only atrocity that takes places day in and day out in the course of the relentless exploitation of the other animals who live on this earth with us, including fish and insects. The oceans, the land, all are decimated in the cause of greed and exploitation. It can all seem so overwhelming at times. But please take a few small steps and sign petitions and write letters and bring an end to a vicious form of barbarity that has gone on long enough.

Please help save the life of the little boy below by signing a petition to ask CEO Flemming Ornskov of Shire Pharmaceuticals to provide the life-sustaining treatment he needs.

The last effort to save 6-year old Jack Fowler may come from signing the Care2 petition. If Jack does not get the treatment developed by Shire Pharmaceuticals he faces death. This is urgent as Jack’s health and cognitive abilities are declining rapidly

“Jack is suffering from a rare disease called Hunter Syndrome, and without treatment, the disease will cause permanent damage to Jack’s organs, including the brain.

Shire Pharmaceuticals has the medicine that can treat and save Jack’s life. However, when the Fowler family finally got their meeting with the CEO of Shire, it only lasted minutes. Their response? “We don’t deal with patients or families.”

Please add your signature help reach 75,000 signatures to convince Shire to help save Jack’s life.

It only takes a minute or two and every signature counts.

Also please sign a second petition:

An interview with Jack’s Dad on the meeting with Shire Pharmaceuticals and their continued denial of life-saving treatment for Jack Fowler.

Jack’s mother sums up her plea very simply. “We won’t sit by and watch our son die. Shire’s motto is ‘Be As Brave As The People We Help’. Please, live up to the promises you make to the world. Be brave and save my son.”
Source and more information

Jack is clearly battling a life-threatening condition. He clearly needs access to the treatment that Shire has developed as his health and cognitive abilities are rapidly deteriorating. And he needs it now, or he faces certain death. The case for expanded access has never been more clear.

We made it known to Shire that we have a location where Jack can receive his treatment. Funding has been made available to ensure all baseline studies are completed and to ensure on-going evaluations and safety monitoring are put in place. We have a physician who has agreed to treat Jack, and we are confident that any Independent Review Board will approve that treatment. FDA guidelines allow for expanded access for such a therapy. Once again, we know it’s safe, and we know it works. The only roadblock to providing Jack with his fair chance at life is Shire. To many, this is inhumane and unacceptable. Please help to save Jack!

Help Stop the Slaughter of 15,000 Dogs for Solstice Celebrations in Yulin, China

Warning: Some of the external links include images that many people may find upsetting.

The Scottish poet Robert Burns, who was passionate about freedom and respect for humankind, wrote, “Man’s Inhumanity to Man, makes countless thousands mourn”

Equally man’s inhumanity to the other animals with whom we share this world makes countless thousands mourn. Moreover the horrendous barbarity and abuse towards our fellow creatures never ceases to shock me and no doubt thousands of others as the internet exposes atrocities so appalling that our minds sometimes fail to believe what we are reading or seeing.

Did you know that in a town called Yulin in China, 10,000 to 15000 dogs are slaughtered every June as part of a summer solstice “festival?”

That’s right 15,000 dogs are slaughtered to celebrate the summer Solstice each year in this Chinese city. Residents of Yulin in Guangxi province consider the festival an ancient summer solstice tradition. What this hideous cruelty has to do with the celebration of the summer solstice I cannot imagine.

If you do not have the time to read any further at least please sign these petitions:

Stop the Yulin dog slaughter

Stop Killing Dogs for Annual Yulin Dog-Eating Festival!!

Petition the Chinese government to stop the Yulin dog eating festival and pass animal welfare laws:

Here are the shocking facts, which make painful reading. How the hell anyone attending this public display of barbarity endures the horror is beyond my comprehension, as it is beyond my ability to understand the kind of mentality that motivates people to commit such cruelty to thinking feeling intelligent beings.

The dogs, who are mostly stolen well cared for family pets, face extreme cruelty as they are taken to slaughter. Before these unfortunate creatures are denied their lives for the sake of tradition, and frankly the indulgence in sickening sadism, they are transported in cramped and filthy conditions and tortured before being killed and eaten by the people of Yulin. The dogs, who are killed in front of other dogs, are electrocuted, burned, skinned and boiled alive or hung upside down and beaten then left to bleed out slowly. This appalling cruelty is done to raise the levels of adrenaline in their bodies, which a good majority of uninformed Chinese consider aids male virility and good health when the meat is eaten.

Thankfully Chinese activists are starting to take a stand and demanding change from their own government, fighting for animal rights at great personal and financial expense.

“Activists have tried to block the event on numerous occasions through open letters and street protests. Some have implored the UK and US governments to interfere with the festival via online petitions. “Please help us stop the Yulin Festival of eating dogs in Guangxi province. It is bloody and disregards life,” a petition on the US White House website was titled.

“They use knives to kill the dogs which are alive,” it said, according to the South China Morning Post. “Then people would like to burn the dogs, which are conscious, so they can eat them.” The petition was recently taken down because it failed to meet the 100,000 signature threshold required to elicit a response from the Obama administration.”

Animal rights activists in China need our support

Extreme cruelty towards animals, such as the above “festival”, is commonplace throughout Asia. The Yulin massacre is but one of the many atrocities that are committed against animals in China day in and day out. In China and other Asian countries dogs are regularly killed in this manner and eaten throughout the year. Bears are kept in cramped cages so that their bile can be extracted from an infected opening cut into their stomachs. As many as 10,000 bears are kept for their whole lives in these cages:  as much as thirty years in a space so small they cannot even turn round. Turtles and other small animals are sealed into little bags and sold as living keychains. Domestic pets and livestock are kept in appalling conditions at markets. Live chickens, turtles, quails and other birds and animals are shoved into net bags and left in the sun on the sidewalk without food and water until they are sold. Cats are boiled alive and eaten. In China animals including cats and dogs are skinned alive for the fur trade

There are a growing number of animal rights activists in China and they need our support.

Here’s how we can help stop the cruel festival this year. Be encouraged by the fact that online activism successfully stopped the dog meat festival of 2011, but it resumed again in 2012 and 2013.

Please help by signing the following three petitions if you have not already done so, one targeting the government of China and the others targeting city officials of Yulin, Shaanxi. Please go to the links and add your signature to all of them. Lets get this festival banned, if enough of us speak out there is a chance that this year we can get this Festival stopped.

The Chinese government must make animal abuse a criminal offence.

Stop the Yulin dog slaughter

Stop Killing Dogs for Annual Yulin Dog-Eating Festival!!

Petition the Chinese government to stop the Yulin dog eating festival and pass animal welfare laws:

Make your voice heard and don’t stop until China passes animal welfare laws!

Please note: While the introduction of animal welfare laws in China are needed urgently, the ideal situation is of course to stop rearing, raising and killing animals for food or exploiting them in any way. As an abolitionist and animal rights supporter I would like to see a cessation of all animal exploitation. While the eating of dogs and cats – most particularly of course the skinning and boiling alive of these animals –  is shocking in the extreme, cruelty is cruelty whether it is a dog or a cow, a cat or a sheep. All animals have the right to life, free from exploitation and cruelty regardless of species or the degree of abuse. Our appalling treatment of animals has to stop world-wide, whether they are animals reared for meat in factory farms here in the UK or pets snatched from their owners in China. Whether they are animals tortured in laboratories in the UK or tortured in a barbaric festival in far away Asia, we need to stand against the abuse of living thinking, feeling, sentient beings wherever they may be. If we are ever to have a moral and ethical society we must learn to respect the rights of all the creatures with whom we share this world.

Mahatma Gandhi once said: “You can judge the morality of a nation by the way the society treats its animals”.

What does the atrocity at Yulin and the other abuses listed above say about China? What does our treatment of animals in factory farms and in laboratories say about the UK, indeed in any western country, such as the USA’s continued cruel experiments on chimpanzees, when animals face painful and horrific experiments. What does it say about human beings as a species when 600,000 mice worldwide die a horrific death as each batch of Botox is tested by injection into the abdomen of these tiny defenceless rodents who suffer paralysis, impaired vision and respiratory distress, dying of suffocation after three days. For what? For the sake of the fickle minded vanity of the wealthy. What does it say about us as a species when we allow calves to be torn from their mothers and locked in containers to provide the rich with a delicacy while millions starve to death – an atrocity to both cattle and other humans.

Well I could go on the list is long and added to daily as we mistreat the other creatures with whom we share this world including our own species.

An old man walking on the beach at dawn noticed a boy picking up a starfish and throwing it into the sea. When asked why, the boy explained that the stranded starfish would die if left to lie in the morning sun. ‘But there are millions of starfish on this beach,’ said the old man. ‘How can your efforts make a difference? ’The boy picked up another starfish and placed it in the waves. ‘It makes a difference to this one,’ he said.

Be a part of the change take action today and make a difference!

Please sign the above petitions if you have not already done so. There are other actions included in the links above concerning the issues discussed. Every action taken goes towards making a better world for both human and nonhuman animals.

I would like to hope that the following is true:

Very little of the great cruelty shown by men can really be attributed to cruel instinct. Most of it comes from thoughtlessness or inherited habit. The roots of cruelty, therefore, are not so much strong as widespread. But the time must come when inhumanity protected by custom and thoughtlessness will succumb before humanity championed by thought. Let us work that this time may come.

I would like to ask Ed Miliband…

An Open Letter to Ed Miliband

In a democracy the poor will have more power than the rich, because there are more of them, and the will of the majority is supreme.

Democracy is when the indigent, and not the men of property, are the rulers.

I have had this post in my drafts folder for a long time, I guess that perhaps I had hoped that things may change, that the Labour party would finally stand up for benefit claimants: the long-term sick, the disabled and the unemployed. Sadly this is not the case and I rather suspect that under Labour nothing will be done to rectify the shocking treatment of benefit claimants as a result of the Tory’s so-called benefit reforms. I consider that Labour will do nothing to save the welfare system from the destruction that the Tory’s have begun,  though some may say that indeed Labour  began the demise of the welfare system beginning with the replacement of incapacity benefit by Employment and Support Allowance.

Prior to the Labour party conference Ed Miliband said he would be “bringing back socialism” to Britain and he vowed to:
Strengthen the national minimum wage to make work pay

“And we are fighting for all of the low-paid people around our country. One of the proudest achievements of the last Labour government was the national minimum wage, making work pay for people.”

And to abolish the bedroom tax

“We are going to scrap the bedroom tax, that’s what I mean by a government that fights for you.

And at the conference he promised to freeze energy prices.

All very commendable and if carried out will make a big difference to many people who are struggling financially as a result of the present government’s austerity measures which falls disproportionately on poor people while millionaires get tax cuts and corporation’s avoid paying tax altogether. I have to say though that energy should be renationalised as should public transport and water and indeed every public service,  and that includes the NHS which is well on the road to privatisation. Energy prices are too high; many people cannot afford to heat their homes this will not change any time soon.

I would like to ask Mr Miliband:

When are labour going to fight for the disabled, the chronically sick and the unemployed, in short people on benefits through no fault of their own, who have suffered not only financially under this coalition’s welfare reforms but who have also suffered the detrimental effects of a malicious propaganda campaign, the like of which resembles the Nazi’s campaign to turn people against the disabled prior to world war two? When are labour going to redress the wrongs committed by the present government, begun by the Labour party themselves who kick started this nightmare of vicious welfare cuts?

While I agree whole heartedly concerning the abolition of the bedroom tax and an increase in the basic minimum wage. I am appalled that you have not condemned in any real way the serious attack on benefit claimants. Thousands of people have committed suicide, many live in fear and dread of insecurity and devastating poverty. Lives already marred by illness and disability and by unemployment have suffered further detriment from the Tory government’s welfare reforms and indeed from Labour who introduced some of the changes such as the unfair Work Capability Assessment WCA and a reduction in the amount paid when Employment and Support Allowance ESA replaced Incapacity Benefit. Also I clearly recall Tony Blair’s “lounging on benefits” comments which some might say launched the drip feed of the negative scrounger propaganda. Though irrelevant now there was some vague mention that Labour may sack ATOS but what will replace it? Something very similar I would imagine.

What has happend to labour, the party of the working man, the party that introduced the NHS, social security, the welfare state, what happened to the real socialist party I once voted for. Now labour is nothing but a sham, a paler shade of blue.

Why did you think the country voted for Labour in 1997, surely not to continue with the right-wing political agenda of the outgoing party. New Labour indeed, more like New conservative. The New One Nation Labour is not much better, how can we be one nation when there is such disparity of living standards when many have far more than their needs, the roughly 619,000 millionaires and 88 billionaires for example, while others have to choose between eating and heating , struggle to pay rent or mortgage from inadequate pay for working away their lives for longer and longer hours under unfair conditions for increasingly lower pay. Why have Labour not reinstated the powers that the conservatives  took away from the trade unions rending them virtually ineffectual.

Time for a real socialist party, time for an end to low wages, inequality and insecurity. Time for a more fair distribution of wealth and a decent standard of living for every man, woman and child including those who by misfortune are too ill or disabled to contribute. To care for those who cannot support themselves is the mark of any decent morally progressive society . Time for you and the Labour party to speak out against the shocking treatment of disabled and chronically sick people, this is one of the greatest of all social injustices, a violation of human rights and the universal codes of plain common decency and morality.

You cannot kowtow to public opinion concerning benefit claimants which has in any case been poisoned by Tory rhetoric. Time to stand up for what is right, time to return to some of the older Labour values, time for real equality and social justice.

There is no justice when the privileged have millions while others live in unheated homes, struggle to feed their families or pay their rent, while sick and disabled people become increasing impoverished, while people die of lack of medical care and while many slave away their precious lives working increasing longer hours for increasing less and less pay. There is no justice globally when a child in a so called developing country dies every 3.5 second for want for food or clean water.

The world has to change for the sake of every man, women and child, for every creature and indeed the earth itself. If not the legacy of future generations will be enslavement to multinational corporations, the devastation of our planet and the extinction of the other creatures with whom we share this world.

How can you a multimillionaire have the audacity to say you are bringing back socialism? It is a long time since the Labour Party have been true socialists.Time to abandon the politics of greed and inequality, these are not hall marks of the Labour party, social justice or morality. How about taking a leaf out of the book of Uruguay’s president Jose Mujic whose charitable donations – which benefit poor people and small entrepreneurs – bring his salary roughly in line with the average Uruguayan income of $775 (£485) a month. In 2010, his annual personal wealth declaration – mandatory for officials in Uruguay – was $1,800 (£1,100), the value of his 1987 Volkswagen Beetle.

It is a sad day when democracy is allowed to die, when an unelected government of millionaires, of over privileged sociopaths determines the future of the masses virtually unchallenged in any real sense save for the ineffectual slanging matches in parliament, none of which have remotely addressed the outrage of social injustice perpetrated against the disabled, sick , unemployed and low paid. Debates in parliament have changed nothing even when the government are defeated as was the case with the Badger debate, they go ahead with their perverted policies anyway, in the case of badgers to proceed with the slaughter last  summer. Time for an independent Watch Dog authority with the powers to call an election when it is apparent that the government work from self interest or other interests that are to the detriment of the many or when it is obvious that the majority no longer support the policies of the elected government and most definitely when the government is not elected as is the case with the coalition

Please don’t tell me about the democratic process and what you will do if you are elected. By than it will be too late and I can well imagine you will do little to reverse the injustice of these wicked welfare reforms. Frankly there are times when I seriously consider that Labour are quite content to let the Tories implement these unjust unfair reforms. Democracy is dead when the unelected have the power to cart blanch destroy in a matter of months the progress of decades.

Until Labour speaks out against the benefit reforms and pledges to reverse the damage done, including Labour’s own role in the matter, I will no longer vote Labour. I have in fact only voted for Labour in recent years simply because we have a good Labour MP in my locality rather than as an endorsement of the party’s abandonment of Labours former socialist values.
