Here is what Cameron says about his party’s welfare reforms:
For me, the moral case for welfare reform is every bit as important as making the numbers add up”
Again Cameron says of his “moral mission” concerning welfare reforms “they are about giving new purpose, new opportunity, new hope – and yes, new responsibility to people who had previously been written off with no chance,”
“Seeing these reforms through is at the heart of our long-term economic plan – and it is at the heart, too, of our social and moral mission in politics today.”
The Coalition government has recently announced it will close the Independent Living Fund ILF on June 30th 2015.
How does cutting off a vital fund to severely disabled people who will never work give “new purpose”, “new hope”?
What the hell is moral about welfare reforms that reduce the income of sick and disabled people? What is moral about taking away the independence of people with profound disabilities? What is moral about reforms that leave people with nothing to eat dependent on food banks, with unheated homes or no homes at all as thousands unable to pay their bedroom tax face eviction.
Now profoundly disabled people face the closure of the Independant living fund, the latest in a succession of vicious reforms and one which is probably the most wicked of them all – not forgetting of course that everyone with varying disability has suffered as a result of these so-called moral welfare reforms.
In April last year, the High Court ruled the closure was lawful, but this was overturned after five disabled people took their case to the Court of Appeal in November.
Take Action – Ways you can help put right this injustice.
Help save the Independent living fund, the closure of which is one of the most heinous and despicable of all the cuts to welfare leaving around 19,000 severely disabled people without a vital means of support.
What is the Independent Living Fund?
The Independent Living Fund (ILF) provides financial support to disabled people allowing them the choice to live independent lives in their communities rather than residential care.

Disabled People against the Cuts DPAC have issued an invitation to attend the Independent living day tea party 4th July at 2 pm:
Department of Works and Pensions
Caxton House ,
Tothill Street SW1.
Also at various venues around the country.
Please take part if you can even if you are not personally effected, show solidarity with sick and disabled people and their carers. We cannot allow this morally bankrupt government to destroy our welfare system, the system that many of us have paid into for decades. We cannot stand by while this self-serving government attack the most vulnerable in our society.
There will be fun & games, and entertainment; and of course, some civil disobedience.
We have come a long way since the demand for Independent Living was first made nearly 50 years ago. Then, as now, IL was our solution for how society supports disabled people to take our place as equals. For how society addresses inaccessible institutions, structures and process it created, which do more to disable people than their impairments ever could.
There are many strands of Independent Living, and all are under threat. Cuts to:
Support funding – such Social Care, the ILF & Disabled Students Allowance;
Education – in areas like the wholesale destruction of SEN Statements and the continued segregation of disabled children into ‘special’ schools;
Transport – the withdrawal of Taxi-cards, freedom passes and the halting of planned works to make infrastructure more accessible, amongst a host of other cuts combine to make disabled people second-class citizens in society.
But we have fought this fight before – and won.

Nic Dakin MP: The ILF has transformed People’s lives…..
The ILF has transformed People’s lives. The Independent Living Fund does what it says on the tin – it liberates people who wouldn’t otherwise be able to, to live independently. It lets them make choices about how they live – things we often take for granted: when to get up or go to bed, what and when to eat. It allows them to work, to be active in the community and to live in their own homes.
