Protest the Cruel Slaughter of a Baby Rabbit

Below is a guest post by the animal and human rights activist and supporter of free software Luis Leonel

This is the article I wouldn’t want ever to write but, unfortunately, there will always be criminals abusing defenseless and innocent creatures.

ANIMAL ABUSERS: DANISH STATION RADIO24SYV AND ASGER JUHL

ASGER JUHL, A PRESENTER ON DANISH STATION RADIO24SYV, BEAT THE NINE-WEEK-OLD FLUFFY BLACK RABBIT, NAMED ALLAN, TO DEATH LIVE ON AIR WITH A BICYCLE PUMP, despite protests from animal rights campaigners in the studio. Then he took the animal home where he and his children cooked and ate it.

Radio24syv has defended the slaughter of the defenseless and innocent baby rabbit. “We knew we would be accused of provocation,” the station said in a statement. “And yes, we indeed wanted to provoke the public and to stir a debate about the hypocrisy when it comes to perceptions of cruelty towards animals.”

Certainly, many animal rights activists will remember that in DENMARK also, a giraffe and then four lions were killed in COPENHAGEN ZOO in 2014. BENGT HOLST, the Scientific Director at Copenhagen Zoo, defended the killings by claiming that the animals were “surplus”. Copenhagen citizens awarded “CITIZEN OF THE YEAR” to Holst that same year.

  1. I looked at some of the stories about this. One had this written: “A statement from the radio station read: “We ensured that we killed the rabbit in a sound manner, in accordance with very precise instructions that were given to us by a zookeeper– so the rabbit did not suffer any harm.””

You know…once you start trying to interact with people who are able to write a sentence where they say they killed someone without causing them any harm…you’re attempting what might just be impossible. One can ‘converse’ with a two year old human but believing that the words used by that two year old have some substance and meaning for her/him is rather self-deluding. Anyone writing such a sentence seems to think that words are just words and have no connection to real things and/or actions in the real world. Be fearful of someone who thinks (or says) that they can kill someone without causing harm. I’ve not found it too fruitful to engage in conversation with intoxicated people or people who are otherwise seriously disconnected from reality. You can do it…but to expect it to have import or significance….well…that’s another matter altogether.

In a bizarre way I can sort of see what they think they are doing…to make people more cognizant of their hypocrisy…but killing someone to in order to make a point…well…there’s something much worse in all this than mere hypocrisy.

    • I agree with what you say, it is a contradiction in terms for anyone to say they have killed someone but caused no harm. There can be few things worse than taking the life of another being whether human or non-human. Indeed I find it disturbing that this person considers that taking a life is not causing harm, this person sets little value for the lives of others. Also I don’t think hitting a tiny rabbit with a bicycle pump can be described as a “sound manner” if by this they mean humanely. Besides killing can never be humane there is nothing humane about killing any creature prematurely for any reason. Life is precious to all animals, they wish to live as we do. I cannot accept that the Zoo considered battering a rabbit with a bicycle as an appropriate method, which would cause the least harm.

It is sickening that this person has to ask on Twitter:

“I killed a rabbit. It didn’t suffer. I ate it. Why is that wrong? Simple question, can you answer? Regards, the Danish radio host.”

It is disturbing that he cannot see why it is wrong to kill this rabbit. This little animal had a right to his life. Animal’s lives are as important to them as ours are to us. All creatures wish to live, and live free of pain. The whole incident is shocking; there is no excuse.

Indeed killing this animal is worse than hypocrisy.

I am curious to know what a psychological assessment would reveal about this person. There can be few people who could kill in such a callous manner a helpless creature than take the poor little rabbit home to cook and eat for himself and his children .

What kind of message has he sent to his children, that it is okay to batter small animals to death? Doing what he did has sanctioned a cruel action, decent people would be doing their best to teach their children the exact opposite. I think few rational people would actually encourage their children to be so cruel by their own example.
