The Good That Men Do

The evil that men do lives after them; the good is oft interred with their bones.
William Shakespeare

It can so often seem that the world is a very uncaring place and animal, and indeed human, abuse is rife, it is as though we are drowning in a sea of cruelty and suffering mostly inflicted by our species. It is frankly depressing and at times you can feel as though there is little good in the world. Yet in the midst of all the awfulness, all the exploitation, all the greed and suffering brought about by humans there are people who care deeply about the other animals with whom we share this world and other people.

Yesterday my son saw a woman pick up a bee very gently with her handkerchief from a busy footpath and place her on a leaf in a nearby bush. This act of kindness to a creature that few would barely notice was just so heartwarming and gives hope that in this world there are caring people who take the time to help these tiny beings few rarely notice.

This is second in a series of Blog entries entitled, The Good that Men Do. Here is the first.

From time to time we need to remind ourselves that there are good people out there who care for animals both human and non human.

The following selection of videos and articles show us that there are good people in the world.

The first video concerns the rescue of a baby elephant who has fallen down a well. Don’t miss the tear jerking conclusion as the rescued baby is reunited with his mother

Read about the tireless efforts of the last year by Lasa Santuary to get this neglected pig back on this feet.

After Incredible Rescue, Tab the Pig Steps Outside for the First Time in Years

“Deaf, blind and so overweight that he couldn’t walk, Tab the pig was dumped at a dog pound. Luckily, Lasa Sanctuary heard his story and came to the rescue.”

“Tab’s progress has been so amazing. For the first few months we focused on building trust and changing his diet. After he became more socialized we worked on dremmeling his hooves and further weight loss. After that, he made leaps and bounds in his mobility as the pounds fell off. Our vet estimated him at 350+ lbs at arrival, he’s now closer to 150. His belly no longer rubs on the floor, he can hear some now that the fat deposits aren’t compacting his ear canals, and his vision has improved as well.”

“Stories like this offer us hope that despite all of the wrong in the world, some people are willing to go above and beyond to show love and compassion to those in need.

Animal sanctuaries offer a place for those who have been abused, neglected or abandoned, and have nowhere else to go.”

Lasa Sanctuary which rescued Tab the pig

“The animals of Lasa are ambassadors for all life.  They embody our ideals of hope, love, diversity, and compassionate healing.  Each individual comes from a past of uncertainty and fear, abuse and/or neglect.  By coming to Lasa, their lives were saved.  By having them here, our lives are enriched.”

Video: 3D Printed Prosthesis Help Derby the Dog Run for the First Time

derby

“Derby, an adorable husky mix was born with underdeveloped forearms (or forepaws as I like to call them) and a hyper developed sense of adventure. Undeterred by his condition, Derby’s foster parents experimented with a few mobility mechanisms and elbow pads for him before turning to 3D Printed prosthesis. Derby’s custom paws just allowed him to run for the first time, an activity he and his adopted parents have every day since.”

One Man Stops, Dozens of Others Walk Past Shivering Dog

“The new year had started on a very sad note — there was another very sad phone call concerning a tiny dog apparently dumped in a big city park.  “She really looks sad, lonely, and frightened.  Have you got time to come out here?”  How could I refuse? “I’ll be right there.”

And when I got there, she immediately broke my heart.  She was forlornly sitting there at a snow-covered baseball diamond, trembling uncontrollably, and so very sadly watching numerous people who were very happily walking their happy canines all about.”

Goat Cheese Farmers Give it All Up to Make Vegan Cheese Instead

“After 20 years as award winning goat cheese farmers, Carol and Julian Pearce have decided to give it all up and make vegan cheese instead.

Still in the transition phase from farm to sanctuary, these two compassionate farmers decided that there was simply no way they could continue to justify bringing more life into the world while there were so many being mistreated and murdered, and in desperate need of a new home.

The No Kill Goat Cheese Farm

Having always identified themselves as being animal lovers and compassionate carers, their goat cheese business was a ‘no kill’ farm, where the animals were not slaughtered after their production days were over, but instead would live out the rest of their natural life on the farm.

What Do Hidden Cameras Reveal About Humanity? Something Amazing

“We are healing. As we continue along our daily lives, if we can stop for 1 minute, look at the sky, look into the eyes of your fellow man, and realize that we are one family, we can break this torment that humanity has endured for so long. We are finally healing, because we are finally connected to each other. Technology is merely a crutch until we can again one day walk on our own. Soon. We are changing. Please, let it continue…”

HIDDEN CAMERAS REVEAL: PEOPLE RISK THEIR LIVES TO HELP OTHERS

“You MUST watch this confirmation of our HUMANITY.

Security cameras around the world reveal the news you never hear: people RUNNING TO RISK THEIR LIVES when they see someone in DANGER. From all corners of the world.

We all look different, but OUR HEARTS BEAT with a collective humanity, and DESIRE TO BE BETTER.

Our Daughter’s Act of Kindness: Dad films little girl giving treats to needy

“This week, a little girl shows the world how to act! She decided on her own that she wanted to make treats for those who needed them, and hand them out! Here’s the TOUCHING video taken on Joe Craig’s smartphone this week, following his daughter as she found people to give treats to. Watch her as she looks for those who could use a bit of love.

“Our daughter decided to make some treats one day and hand them out. This is what happened,” says Joe, as an intro to the video.

You can see that the video is shaky. Joe held his phone vertically instead of horizontally. But the only thing that matters is seeing a little girl with love and empathy and kindness, teaching the world how to act: to see people with our HEARTS.

You can also see the joy on people’s faces as she approaches them, realizing she is giving them a little treat.
