Instead of rising majestically to his full height of 10 feet, the massive animal remained on the ground. Yongki, an endangered Sumatran elephant, was slaughtered for his precious ivory tusks.

“There are just 2,400 to 2,800 Sumatran elephants in the wild, according to the World Wildlife Fund. These animals are critically endangered, having lost half of their population in one generation. They are threatened by poaching and deforestation in their native Asian habitat. “

  1. Ivory poaching is so serious that it appears to be altering elephant evolution in Africa. Researchers have reported herds having few if any animals with tusks. Apparently, elephants without a genetic predisposition for large tusks have a better chance of survival and reproduction. Very sad.

    • It is interesting that there are fewer elephants now with tusks, indeed sad that humans have such a profound and detrimental affect on other species that we change the course of evolution so dramatically. Though it is good that elephants without tusks or smaller tusk will be safe from poachers, it is nevertheless tragic. The whole situation is just so shocking, unfortunately there seems no end in sight.
