MOUSTACHED KINGFISHER PHOTOGRAPHED FOR FIRST TIME AND THEN EUTHANIZED

Christopherjpg

CHRISTOPHER FILARDI is the director to PACIFIC PROGRAMS for the AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY’S CENTER FOR BIODIVERSITY AND CONSERVATION.

He recently found and photographed the first male MOUSTACHED KINGFISHER ever recorded, the elusive adorable “ghost bird” of the Solomon Islands he’d sought for more than 20 years. Then he euthanized the individual bird to preserve as part of the scientific record, after assessing the state of the population and the state of the habitat, and concluding it was substantial and healthy enough that taking the specimen—the only male ever observed by science—would not affect the population’s success.

“Killing ‘in the name of conservation’ or ‘in the name of education’ or ‘in the name of whatever’ simply needs to stop. It is wrong and sets a horrific precedent for future research and for children. Imagine what a youngster would think if he or she heard something like, ‘I met a rare and gorgeous bird today… and I killed him.’ Even if this handsome male were a member of a common species, there was no reason to kill him. It sickens me that this practice continues and I hope more people will work hard to put an end to it right now, before more fascinating animals are killed,” MARC BEKOFF, Professor emeritus of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of Colorado, wrote on his article “Ridiculously Gorgeous Rare Bird” Photographed, Caught, and … Killed by Researcher”

The photo shows Christopher Filardi grabbing the beautiful MOUSTACHED KINGFISHER bird. Perhaps, with that hand he killed the defenseless and innocent animal.

You may be asking yourself now what the difference between Christopher Filardi and Denmark zoos researchers is. The answer is none.

Tax Credit Cuts: Please Sign Urgent Petition Today.

Please stand up for Britain’s working families by adding your name to the following 38 Degrees petition? Please sign today!

tax credits eat

It is vital that we stop cuts to tax credits. Tomorrow is a decisive day. Unless we stop them, cuts to tax credits will take money away from some of the UK’s poorest children and will plunge 200,000 children into poverty.

On Monday, the House of Lords will vote on the cuts. A growing group of Lords are worried about pushing families into poverty. But the government is pressuring them to vote in favour.

Please sign the following urgent petition which will be carried into parliament on Monday 26th, right before the votes. Please sign now without delay to make sure your signature adds to the pressure. Please share widely

Petition To Members of the House of Lords

House of Lords: Stop the tax credit cuts:
https://speakout.38degrees.org.uk/campaigns/house-of-lords-stop-tax-credit-cuts

Please help protect families from a bullying government which gives tax concessions to the rich while taking much-needed money from poor families who work hard for low pay.

I am sorry this petition is last minute as I didn’t know about the 38 degrees campaign until this morning. Every signature counts so please sign and share. Three Million Families stand to loose £1,300 each year from April 2016.

This government is vile and self-serving, it supports the interests of the over privileged while taking money by means of this punitive welfare cut away from people who have so little to begin with. Despite a preelection promise not to cut tax credits Cameron has spoken of his “delight” at tax credit cuts while George Osborne has said he is ‘comfortable’ with his decision to take this vital money away from hardworking working families.

More than 3 million families will be hit by tax credit cuts – but George Osborne is ‘comfortable’ with that

“More than 3million families are to lose out from the tax credit cuts. But George Osborne tells MPs he’s ‘comfortable’ with that.
Sneering millionaire George Osborne has boasted he was “comfortable” with slashing tax credits for millions of hard-working families.
The Chancellor also claimed Tories “signalled” during the election campaign that they would attack the vital lifeline for the low-paid.The Conservatives told voters in the run-up to May’s crunch poll that they would cut £12billion of welfare, but repeatedly refuse to outline where the axe would fall.

In fact, David Cameron pledged that tax credits would not be targetted.”

The House of Lords will be voting on a ‘statutory instrument’ to cut tax credits. This is a way for the government to change the law without a whole new law going through Parliament.

Earlier this week, some members of the House of Lords spoke out against the cuts. They announced plans to stop the cuts altogether, using a rare process called a ‘fatal motion’. But the government said they’d ‘suspend’ the House of Lords if they dared – forcing them to back down.

Please Sign Urgent Petitions to Help Save Ali Mohammed al-Nimr From Execution

17534_ali.JPG_1_460x230

Please sign the following petitions and help save the life of a young man who is in danger of imminent execution for demonstrating against the government. There are Two Petitions one from avaaz.org and the other from Reprieve.org  and other actions you may take to help Ali. Please take as much action as you can.

Petition from avaaz.org

To President Obama, Prime Minister Cameron, Chancellor Merkel, U.N. officials and all world leaders:

Saudi Arabia: Save Ali from Beheading and Crucifixion!

“Saudi Arabia is about to behead a 21-year-old man and then crucify his body in public. This same country was just chosen to head a UN Human Rights Council panel. What staggering hypocrisy!

Ali Mohammed al-Nimr was arrested when he was 17 for participating in demonstrations against the government, then he was convicted under torture. But his case is not an exception — Saudi Arabia has executed more than 100 people this year, that’s a rate of one every two days!

After massive public pressure, France and the UK have urged the Saudis stop this execution, but the US and Germany have yet to speak out. The best way to get urgent action is to channel our outrage to these leaders who have influence over the regime. Sign up now to save Ali, and then stop this human rights farce, his execution could happen any time:”

Please read more, sign the petition and share widely:

The death penalty should have no place in any modern society, most certainly when it is issued for offences such as demonstrating or protesting which is a basic human right in many countries. I do not believe that anyone has the right to take the life of another person even in the case of a serious crime let alone for a less serious infringement of the law.

The death penalty as I am sure you are well aware is still a punishment meted out not only in Saudi Arabia of course but also in many countries of the world including the USA and China. It is time that this form of punishment was consigned to history where it belongs.

The Happy Kingdom of Denmark and the Unhappy Republic of Uruguay

Below is a guest post by the animal and human rights activist and supporter of free software Luis Leonel.

THE HAPPY KINGDOM OF DENMARK AND THE UNHAPPY REPUBLIC OF URUGUAY

DENMARK (THE KINGDOM OF DENMARK) brags about being a country with high standard of living and ranking highly in education, health care, and human rights. Even though its weather can be dreary and most of days are dark in winter, the Danish people don’t give up and consider themselves to be one of the world’s happiest (according to the United Nation’s World Happiness Report, Denmark came in third in the 2015 following closely behind Switzerland and Iceland). Many of these happy Danish people are even happier when they go to the Danish zoos to watch public dissections of animals, because the happy Danish zoos will slaughter their animals if they became “surplus” and, also, they will dissect them in public for the sake of education of the happy Danish adults and children, they will claim―and in order to defy animal rights activists, they won’t ever claim. What a happy country!

On the contrary, URUGUAY (EASTERN REPUBLIC OF URUGUAY) is not a happy country (came 32 in the United Nation’s World Happiness Report 2015) in spite of being regarded as one of the most liberal nations and socially developed in the world. As in Denmark, the Uruguayan education system provides free of charge access to public primary school, secondary school and higher education, and has a universal health care system financed through taxes. Same-sex marriage and abortion are, as in Denmark, also legal in Uruguay. While BESTIALITY was legal in Denmark up until recently (in Denmark, sex with an animal had previously been allowed as long as the animal wasn’t harmed, which was hard to prove), it never was in Uruguay. Even The Economist named Uruguay “country of the year” in 2013 due to its worldwide innovative policy of legalizing the production, sale and consumption of cannabis.

As opposed to the happy Danish people, many of the unhappy Uruguayan people are even unhappier when they visit the Uruguayan zoos. Therefore, since some years ago, the unhappy Uruguayan zoos are getting rid of their exotic animals. Will they slaughter their “surplus” animals as the happy Danish zoos do every year? No, they are sending them to the American THE WILD ANIMAL SANCTUARY. The Uruguayan animal rights association ANIMALES SIN HOGAR, with the support of the The Wild Animal Sanctuary, has already sent two lionesses and one lion to the sanctuary. One bear, one lion and two tigers will also be sent in next months. “Why are these South American savages sending those great animals to a sanctuary instead of killing them and then doing a beautiful dissection?,” the happy Danish people ask. What an unhappy country!

Animal Abuser: Jeremy John Irons

Below is a guest post by the animal and human rights activist and supporter of free software Luis Leonel.

Jeremy

JEREMY JOHN IRONS is an English actor.

In 2004, Irons publicly declared his support for the COUNTRYSIDE ALLIANCE, a British organisation promoting issues relating to the countryside such as farming, rural services, small businesses and country sports. This organisation has long defended hunting and shooting, especially hunting with hounds, opposed the HUNTING ACT 2004 and in Scotland campaigned against the PROTECTION OF WILD MAMMALS ACT 2002.

The Hunting Act 2004 is an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom which bans the hunting of wild mammals (foxes, deer, hares and mink) with dogs in England and Wales. Irons referred to this Act as an “outrageous assault on civil liberties” and “one of the two most devastating parliamentary votes in the last century.”

The Protection of Wild Mammals Act 2002 was passed by the Scottish Parliament making Scotland the first part of the United Kingdom to ban traditional fox hunting and hare coursing.

When he was asked in an interview by The Guardian on January 2007 about his biggest disappointment, he didn’t hesitate to reply: “When the British government banned fox hunting.”

The actor is also a critic of the death penalty for humans, even though those humans could have committed heinous crimes, but he does support the cruel blood sport of fox hunting in which innocent foxes, many of them being babies, are torn from their underground homes and chased by trained hounds until they are outrun and subsequently ripped to pieces.

Read About Shocking Treatment of cows at Milk Supplier Daisy Farms and Sign Petition

“Cows are amongst the gentlest of breathing creatures; none show more passionate tenderness to their young when deprived of them; and, in short, I am not ashamed to profess a deep love for these quiet creatures.”
Thomas de Quincey

calf-close-up-daisy-farm (2)
“A spiked ring was fastened to this calf’s nostrils to prevent nursing. Rings were sometimes screwed on so tightly and left on for so long that they pierced the tissue between the nostrils.”

Please read the following from PETA. I cannot tell you how shocked I am. That poor calf in the above photo, how cruel, how inhumane to treat a living thinking sentient creature in such an appalling way. And that is not the worse of the treatment these helpless animals suffer at the hands of this milk supplier and no doubt many others. The treatment of these animals is heartbreaking.

Warning Images that some people will find upsetting both further down and also the video and graphics on the link to the petition which is a pledge to go Vegan:

PETA exposé

“The “best-cared for cows on the planet.” That’s the claim made by Daisy Farms, a milk supplier to Daisy Brand sour cream and cottage cheese—products that can be found in supermarkets all over the country (USA). Do conditions on the farm really live up to that claim?

Not according to two eyewitnesses who worked at the farm.

A PETA exposé reveals the hell on Earth experienced by cows in the dairy industry.

Cows were forced to stand and lie in their own waste. They were kicked, whipped, and jabbed with pens and a knife—even while they were in labor. Two cows with severe lacerations on their tails were not treated by a veterinarian, to the knowledge of PETA’s observer, including one cow whose wound was seen bleeding more than three weeks after her tail had been torn in two.

Some sick cows were finally shot, while others were killed by injections to induce a heart attack while they were fully conscious.

As you can see in the video footage, workers pulled calves out of their mothers’ wombs, causing the cows to cry out and defecate. Several newborn calves drowned when workers shoved tubes down their throats and forced milk into their lungs instead of their stomachs. The survivors had their heads smeared with a caustic paste to destroy their sensitive horn tissue—without any anesthetics.

The only way to ensure that no animals suffer for your sour cream, cheese, milk, ice cream, coffee creamer, and yogurt is to go vegan. We can help you every step of the way with free recipes and tips to make the transition an easy one. Won’t you make this simple choice for animals?

cows-Daisy-need-your-help

Sign our petition and pledge to avoid all animal-derived foods—no matter what feel-good language and photographs a company may use to try to entice you. Wherever profits are the bottom line, corners are cut. And animals pay the price every time.

Together, we can make a difference for cows suffering in the dairy industry. All you have to do is take a moment to take action today.

Please sign the petition and make the pledge to go vegan.

Read More About Cows

Sentience in Cattle

Like sheep, pigs and poultry cattle are sentient beings.

Cows are sentient beings, they have feelings, their apparent appearance of docility may simply be an acceptance of their lot in life, docility is often a mark of depression, acceptance or resignation. Cows are not milk making machines spontaneously producing milk at our behest. Like humans, cows in their natural environment and circumstances without our interference lactate only to produce milk for their new born. Cows are very much like ourselves when it comes to their offspring, like us the gestation period is nine months, in their natural environment a calf will suckle for nine to twelve months. Before giving birth in the wild cows will separate themselves from the rest of the herd and hide their calves for several days after giving birth. This is done to prevent intrusion from other females which may interfere with bonding. After only five minutes cows develop a strong bond with their calf so you can understand the trauma of separation, a trauma much like or the same as that experienced by a human mother. Such emotion of this intensity shows that these creatures are sentient, the lament of a cow denied her newborn is one of the most unmistakeable indications of sentience.

Here are two stories of the great bond between mother cows and their offspring.

To complete research for an academic project Valerie Macys needed to examine documents in the study of a charming white farm house next to a cattle farm. A colleague had described it as a place of pastoral serenity with cows peacefully grazing nearby. Prepared for a relaxing visit the reality was to prove quite different

‘I arrived at the house on a late October afternoon. The fall leaves were in full blazing glory, and I noticed that the cows were even closer to the house than I had expected. I could actually hear them before I got out of my car. When I turned off the engine, I knew immediately that something was terribly wrong. I witnessed a scene of chaos. Cows bellowed and stomped, staggering around the fields. They banged into each other and pushed against the fence, located approximately 20 feet from my car. Dozens of them stood wild-eyed, snuffing the air, shrieking horribly. Unfortunately, I knew all too well what their confusion and turmoil was about.”

“They’ve taken your babies,” I said sadly, looking directly into one cow’s mournful eyes. They rolled back in her head as she bellowed anew. Feeling sick to the pit of my stomach, I entered the house and spoke to the curator, who also lives there. Her name is Mary. “Those cows are frantic,” I said. The wailing penetrated even inside. I had never heard anything like it. “How long will this go on?” I asked. “Until tomorrow,” she replied. “Then more slaughter trucks will come for them, and it will all be over.” I thought my heart would hit the floor. I recalled the intense moment when I had stared at the woeful mother cow, practically eyeball to eyeball.”

Nothing really moves me to action like bearing witness, as I did those days in West Virginia. Nothing is more traumatic for me either.

After this experience Valerie Macys stopped eating meat

Please read the rest of this moving story :

Appointment at the End of the World: Valerie Macys
http://www.all-creatures.org/articles/ar-appointment.html

The following two examples describe the incredible resourcefulness and determination on the part of cows to escape death and in one case save her unborn calf.

“A cow named Suzie was about to be loaded on a freighter bound for Venezuela when she turned around, ran back down the gangplank, and leaped into the river. Even though she was pregnant, or perhaps because she was pregnant, she managed to swim all the way across the river, eluding capture for several days. (Believe it or not, cows actually love swimming!) She was rescued by PETA and sent to a sanctuary for farmed animals.

When workers at a slaughterhouse in Massachusetts went on break, Emily the cow made a break of her own. She took a tremendous leap over a five-foot gate and escaped into the woods, surviving for several weeks in New England’s snowiest winter in a decade, cleverly refusing to touch the hay put out to lure her back to the slaughterhouse. When she was eventually caught by the owners of a nearby sanctuary, public outcry demanded that the slaughterhouse allow the sanctuary to buy her for one dollar. Today, Emily is living happily in Massachusetts, a testimony to the fact that eating meat means eating animals who don’t want to die.”

The Hidden Lives of Cows
http://www.peta.org/issues/animals-used-for-food/factory-farming/cows/hidden-lives-cows/

Cattle experience positive emotions such as of Joy and pleasure as do many other animals, and those of us who have a dog or a cat are familiar with this aspect of an animal’s life. Rather like the spring lamb who gambols with sheer joy, cows it seems greet spring with similar exuberance. Jonathan Balcombe in his book pleasurable Kingdom says:

“Cattle when first let out into fields following a long winter confinement, tear about the field, kicking their legs into the air. They seem literally to be full of the joys of spring and look for all the world like excited toddlers released into the playground after hours sat behind their desks.”

What a delightful account but do bear in mind that the vast majority of cows are never released into fields, rather they spend their days instead tethered in sheds. Animal Rights: Factory Farming Cattle

There are many amazing stories that can lead us to the conclusion that cows are intelligent creatures, with emotions, feelings and needs similar to our own. Here is I quote Jeffery Massom.

After he and his family pass by cattle confined in a feed lot staring out at them – not grazing or doing what cows normally do, approaching the fence and staring out at the author and his family. He speculates:

“What I imagined was that the cows where wondering why they where there singled out for death. What kind of a world was it that allowed my family and me, cosy and safe in our new car to simply drive by, where as they and their families where destined to be driven away in a large truck and murdered for their meat?

One day far into the future people will marvel that we took the lives of these gentle and beautiful animals to satisfy our greed and gluttony. And one day a family much like mine will drive by and cows much like these will be grazing on a hillside, and those cows will be admired rather than eaten by humans.”

The above stories and information are included on my website Think Differently About Sheep where you can read more stories which show that cattle are sentient creatures

Sentience in Farm Animals: Cattle

Factory Farming

Read the shocking facts about factory farming. There are no graphics but the facts are horrifying nonetheless.
“Don’t be fooled by the dairy industry’s advertising of dairy products with cattle grazing peacefully in fields of buttercups, with the sun warming their backs and their calves by their sides, in most cases nothing could be further from the truth. Here is the grim reality behind your beef burger, glass of milk and pat of butter”

Thought Provoking Video: The Lie we live

This powerful video shows us the awful reality of our existence, how we live our lives and how we treat the other creatures with whom we share this planet and the very earth itself.

The Lie we Live

This brilliant video by Spencer Cathcart more or less says what a lot of us already know. There are though many who continue to live their lives either in ignorance or with blind acceptance of the status quo.

Please spread awareness concerning the reality of our existence by sharing this video widely.
Without such awareness nothing will ever change. The Lie we Live echos what many of us know but cannot put into words. We often feel hopeless, powerless, depressed and isolated, this amazing video if nothing else will make you feel less alone.

We can all do something to change the world, every action counts, every action brings about change. I know that if we do not bring about change we the human race are doomed and will not survive.

Take Action

Someone once said:
“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.”

And that is the problem is it not. Either as a result of indifference or hopelessness people tend to give up and accept that nothing will ever change and as a consequence do nothing.

Here are a few suggestions

Write letters, sign petitions, demonstrate, boycott. Complain complain complain about injustice no matter where or who, human or non human and the environment.

Stop supporting big corporations that harm us, other animals and the environment. Buy local, fair trade and certified sustainable products. Replace toxic cleaning products that damage the environment and harm animals with natural products. Don’t use pesticides; the ubiquitous use of toxic herbicides and pesticides used not only by farmers but by gardeners and just about everyone else including your local council poisons our environment. These products are sold ad-lib in garden centres and sprayed indiscriminately by home owners as a matter of course with little consideration to the damage they do.

Change Your Diet – Go Vegan

One simple action you can take is change your diet. What you eat can have a far reaching effect. Stop eating meat.

Why go Vegan

For the sake of animals, other people, your health and the environment

Learn more and take the pledge:
https://www.vegansociety.com/try-vegan/why-go-vegan

We need a new society where everyone is equal, where everyone has enough not only for their material needs but to live a fulfilling and meaningful life. A society free from discrimination and exploitation, free from racism, sexism, specism or any other prejudicial distinction. Our only enemies are disease and death, not each other, its time to demand a better world for ourselves, future generations and the other animals with whom we share this planet. Most of the suffering in life is as result of other people, people who cannot see beyond their striving for power and their insatiable greed. We allow such people to destroy our lives, it has to stop. With the aid of the internet we can make a difference in a way hitherto not available to us. This is a unique time in our entire history when many more people by means of the internet have the opportunity to have their say. Regardless of the “right” education or qualification many of us can now speak out more than ever before, and even speaking out on-line helps to bring about change. Without the internet much of what is wrong with this world would not be known to us as a result of media bias and government manipulation. An example of this is right here in the UK concerning the governments’ treatment of sick and disabled people as a result of vicious and punitive welfare reforms which largely goes ignored by the media, yet is so appalling that the UN are investigating human rights violations as a result of these unfair changes to benefits and the affect it is having on the most vulnerable people in our society. As a result of the internet the true extent of the abuse of animals is brought to our attention and as a consequence many atrocities have been stopped as a result of public pressure via the Internet.

Every day take one small action to make this world a better place.
