Petition from avaaz.org
To President Obama, Prime Minister Cameron, Chancellor Merkel, U.N. officials and all world leaders:
Saudi Arabia: Save Ali from Beheading and Crucifixion!
“Saudi Arabia is about to behead a 21-year-old man and then crucify his body in public. This same country was just chosen to head a UN Human Rights Council panel. What staggering hypocrisy!
Ali Mohammed al-Nimr was arrested when he was 17 for participating in demonstrations against the government, then he was convicted under torture. But his case is not an exception — Saudi Arabia has executed more than 100 people this year, that’s a rate of one every two days!
After massive public pressure, France and the UK have urged the Saudis stop this execution, but the US and Germany have yet to speak out. The best way to get urgent action is to channel our outrage to these leaders who have influence over the regime. Sign up now to save Ali, and then stop this human rights farce, his execution could happen any time:”

The death penalty should have no place in any modern society, most certainly when it is issued for offences such as demonstrating or protesting which is a basic human right in many countries. I do not believe that anyone has the right to take the life of another person even in the case of a serious crime let alone for a less serious infringement of the law.
The death penalty as I am sure you are well aware is still a punishment meted out not only in Saudi Arabia of course but also in many countries of the world including the USA and China. It is time that this form of punishment was consigned to history where it belongs.
