Ask the UK to challenge China over torture

Please support the following campaign to help the Tibetan people by contacting the UK’s foreign secretary about Torture in Tibet

“The next “UK-China Human Rights Dialogue” is due to take place in a few weeks’ time.

The dialogue is a meeting which normally takes place twice a year in which the UK raises human rights concerns directly with China’s government. The next meeting follows China’s review last November by the Committee Against Torture at the United Nations which found that “the practice of torture and ill-treatment is still deeply entrenched in the criminal justice system” in China and Tibet.

China’s response was simply to claim that torture is not allowed. China’s government has proved that it is unwilling to meet its obligations to end torture under international law. The UK government rarely speaks up strongly on behalf of human rights in Tibet. This is an opportunity for the United Kingdom to add to the pressure put on China by the UN and press for action.

Please send an email to the Foreign & Commonwealth Office to ask them to ensure that torture is high on the agenda for the meeting. Fill in the details below to send the email – you can also change the subject line and the wording for more impact, if you wish.”

“We campaign for an end to China’s occupation of Tibet and for international recognition of Tibetans’ right to freedom. It’s our job to generate more support for Tibet and to do what we can to protect Tibetans’ human rights. We also campaign to make sure governments, companies and individuals don’t do anything which could sustain the occupation or help the Chinese government deny Tibetans their freedom.

You can help us. Our campaigns aim to achieve concrete outcomes which help Tibetans in their struggle and weaken China’s rule. From speaking up for political prisoners to challenging politicians who turn their backs on Tibet, we depend on the actions of individuals to give our campaigns the power to make a difference. The nations of the world it seems have turned their backs on the plight of the Tibetan people, it is up to us to speak out in any way we can. Please support the above campaigns. There is no place in our world for torture, suppression and other violations of human rights. Yet the nations of the world fail to speak out and oppose the brutal suppression of the Tibetan people, the genocide of over 1 million people, torture, imprisonment and the destruction of their culture..

I am in the process of reading a book Tibetan Venture written in 1949 by explorer Andre Guibaut who was among the last people to visit Tibet as it once was untouched by the progress and conflicts of the rest of the world. In the preface he writes:

“But though Tibet, protected by its high mountains as by its boreal climate, has managed to escape for a few years from the tragic community of nations, it is not likely to preserve its anachronistic state much longer.Already men of strange purpose armed with wooden pegs and sighting apparatus have penetrated into its territory, and subsequently roads have bitten into the soil of the Lamas and airfields have flattened it.

The Tibetans do not understand these wooden pegs with which the Chinese mark out their tracks, and which bear some resemblance to the pegs which the wild tribes of the eastern mountains , on the far fringes of Tibet, plant around their settlements to drive away evil spirits. They do not realize that these pegs are warning signs that a very ancient civilization, now condemned, is about to disappear. Will that which is to come be an improvement? The time is obviously near when it will be possible to penetrate Tibet by car or plane. Than the Lama civilization will dissolve into tourism . Perhaps I shall be one of the last to have known that very ancient epoch of mankind. ” (Emphasis mine)

That which was to come is certainly no improvement with the genocide of over 1 million people, the eradication of the Tibetan culture, ongoing torture and other human rights violations. Maybe in time Tibet would embrace the modern world with all its advantages but in their own time in their own way not by force, coercion, exploitation and brutal suppression and the continuing violation of their human rights.
