Orangutan Desperately Trying to Stop a Bulldozer From Destroying His Home : Take Action

“I would make a difference by banning unsustainable palm oil in order to save the rainforest and orangutan habitats along with the rest of the three hundred thousand other species that live in the rainforest.”
Katie Cleary

The photo above shows the desperation of an orangutan, who fortunately has been rescued, as a bulldozer destroys his habitat in West Borneo. A poignant and vivid reminder of the destruction of the habitats of wild animals as their forest home is laid waste to provide land to grow palm oil. If this destruction is not stopped the orangutan will be extinct by 2020.

Please sign as many of the petitions below as you can and also take some of the suggested actions from Say No To palm Oil.

“Orangutan Desperately Trying to Stop a Bulldozer From Destroying His Home Is a Wake Up Call For Us All (VIDEO)

“Around 50,000 square miles of tropical forests are cleared each year to produce palm oil, a common ingredient of our snacks and other foods but also household products and cosmetics. As the forests are cleared, many orangutans are forced to scavenge for food on palm plantations – where they are often killed as “pests” or captured and sold into the exotic pet trade.”

This Orangutan Tried to Stop a Bulldozer From Destroying His Home

“The footage is devastating. An orangutan runs across a felled tree and tries to fight off a bulldozer clearing his natural habitat in West Borneo.

Members of International Animal Rescue are seen coming to the orangutan’s aid. It’s a heartbreaking reminder of the plight critically endangered orangutans face. Over the past 20 years, orangutans have lost 55% of their natural habitat due to deforestation. Their population has decreased 50% over the past 60 years, due in large part to this loss of habitat.”

Please Help to Finally Stop The Yulin Dog Meat Festival

It’s that time of year again, the summer solstice and the barbaric Yulin dog meat festival June 21st for ten days. What should be a celebration of the changing of the seasons is used as an excuse to slaughter helpless animals. Please read the information below and sign the petition:

“Every summer, thousands of dogs — many just puppies — are killed during the ten days of the Yulin Dog Meat Festival. And it’s going to happen all over again, unless people like you speak out to stop this year’s horrific festival.

One of the most terrifying things about the annual festival is that many household dogs, cats and other pets are abducted by kidnappers trying to make a quick buck as the dog festival begins. Local animal lovers often try to buy the dogs before butchers can, but dog sellers often refuse to sell to activists.

While there are less animals killed than when the event was first introduced in 2009 as a result of global outrage and protest and the work of animal charities, such as the humane society, the entire event regarding the brutal slaughter of dogs and cats needs to end, each animal’s life is important to the individual animal and no dogs or cats should be killed.

There is a lot less publicity for this year’s so called festival, maybe as a result of the reduction of the number of animals killed as explained in the petition link above. I had in fact forgotten about this “festival” until seeing the above petition today, so please remind everyone by sharing widely. Until zero animals are killed the protest needs to continue.

One less barbarity in the world makes the world a better and safer place for us all. It is very difficult and indeed depressing to realise that in this world there are people who can so willingly be brutal towards both one another and the other species with whom we share this planet, who seem without conscience or remorse to so easily kill and maim the helpless and vulnerable simply for some perverse pleasure or as a result of misguided ignorance.

Action to Protect Wildlife Affected by Proposed Mexican Border Wall

“We build too many walls and not enough bridges.”
Isaac Newton

The following petition was in my email box this morning, a reminder that the Mexican wall is still on Trump’s bizarre  agenda.

Please sign the following petition to try and halt yet another of Trump’s misguided polices which will adversely affect wildlife, including endangered species, in addition of course to undermining the rights of indigenous communities and harming the environment:

Petition Sponsored by: Defenders of Wildlife

Oppose The Border Wall And Protect Wildlife!

“Funding the wall would destroy wildlife habitat.

President Trump’s crusade to build an impenetrable wall between the U.S. and Mexico could condemn wildlife already on the brink of extinction.

But Congress can put a stop to Trump’s fixation. Federal legislators have the power to deny funding for this disastrous roadblock to the survival of imperiled species. Funding the wall would destroy wildlife habitat and could be the end of the road for these species like endangered Mexican grey wolves, ocelots and jaguars.

We must act now! Demand that Congress refuse to fund the border wall. ”

The border wall is racially motivated, it is bad for people, animals and the environment.

Here are more actions to take to oppose this insane proposal

Petition

Stop Trump From Building the Wall

https://www.change.org/p/united-states-supreme-court-stop-trump-from-building-the-wall

Take a pledge to fight Trump’s Border wall

“More than 650 miles of barriers already exist along the border. These walls, fences and barriers cut through sensitive ecosystems, disrupt animal migration patterns, cause catastrophic flooding, and divide communities and tribal nations.

Now Donald Trump wants a wall across the entire 2,000-mile border. Trump’s wall would harm border communities, perpetuate human suffering, destroy thousands of acres of habitat and halt the cross-border migration of dozens of animal species. In fact, as revealed in the Center’s 2017 report A Wall in the Wild, 93 threatened, endangered and candidate species would potentially be affected by construction of a wall and related infrastructure spanning the entirety of the border.”

This comment included in the first petition raises a good point:”Wildlife & the environment is so much more important than immigrants coming into our country. We’re all descended from immigrants, unless you’re Native American.”

Trump seeks further funding

“President Donald Trump will boost by a half-billion dollars his funding request for his plan to build a border wall between the United States and Mexico, seeking at least $2.2 billion for the controversial project in fiscal year 2019, multiple GOP sources said.

The Trump administration requested $1.6 billion for the project earlier this year, but White House officials are going to increase that amount to at least $2.2 billion and possibly more, the congressional and administration officials said.”

Demand the Nationalisation of Water

“Access to a secure, safe and sufficient source of fresh water is a fundamental   requirement for the survival, well-being and socio-economic development of   all humanity. ”
 Kofi Annan,

Since 1989 the year of privatisation water bills have gone up by 40 per cent!

Not so long ago when our water was nationalised, controlled and distributed by councils and government departments our water bills were very modest indeed, few people worried about receiving them, few were unable to pay them and no one was cut off. After privatisation these bills escalated substantially. Along with privatisation came water metres for many people, bringing with it the need to carefully watch usage of water and while I don’t for one minutes suggest it is okay to waste water, in a country such as the UK there should be no anxiety about using water or going without water as a result of concern that you cannot pay the extortionate bill, the profit from which lines the pockets of greedy private water firms whose share holders make billions  from this life giving, life enhancing precious resource without which none of us can live. To make matter worse you have no say in who supplies your water, you have to go with whatever water company supplies the water to your locality so there is no competition that would help keep prices down, so basically they can charge what the hell the like.

Please read more and sign the following petition and demand that our water supply is nationalised.

“Our household bills are rising — while greedy private water firms are making billions for their shareholders and executives from our public service! And receiving more money in tax breaks than they’ve paid in tax.

If our water industry was publicly owned, the money currently going to private shareholders could be reinvested into making our water infrastructure better, or passed back to customers in reduced bills.”

A whopping £13.5bn has been paid out to shareholders in dividends since 2010. At the same time as greedy private firms have claimed huge tax breaks and forced up prices for millions of customers. Since the water industry was privatised in 1989, water bills have risen in real terms by 40%.”

There are many things that in no circumstance should be sold for profit, such as food, shelter, medical care and water, all vital to life, health and well being. No one has the right to monopolize these vital resources upon which life depends and distribute them for a profit, it is highly immoral.

If our water industry was nationalised, the nearly 14.billion profit paid out to greedy shareholders could be used instead to improve water services, and reduce prices for everyone. As before privatisation it would be run by councils and government departments and as such it is would our elected representatives who would be accountable to voters to keep prices down and make sure the service runs well.

Stop the trump administrations from lifting ban on extreme hunting in Alaska

Below are two petitions concerning the reinstatement of hunting in Alaska.

The trump administration is planning to roll back a 2015 regulation that bans aggressive hunting tactics in roughly 20 million acres of federal lands in Alaska including using dogs to hunt black bears, luring black and brown bears with bait, shooting bear cubs and wolf pups in their dens or killing caribou (reindeer) from motor boats.

All hunting is wrong, barbaric and totally unnecessary and only encourages callous violent behavior in those who participate in it

“Allowing the killing of bear cubs and wolf pups in their dens is barbaric and inhumane. The proposed regulations cast aside the very purpose of national parks to protect wildlife and wild places” Jamie Rappaport Clark,Defenders of Wildlife president and CEO.

National parks should protect wildlife not encourage the more backward sociopathic element of our society to use live animals as target practice for whatever perverted pleasure it gives them. The proposal is extreme as are the methods of hunting and needs to be stopped.

Please sign and share the following two petitions

Please read the following and sign the petition.

“In Alaska, you might soon be able to teach your children the wonder of the great outdoors by killing helpless bear cubs and wolf pups in their dens or mowing down swimming caribou from the comfort of your own motorboat.

The Trump administration wants to open the door to extreme hunting techniques of some of Alaska’s most iconic animals. The proposal is an attempt to rollback a 2015 Obama administration regulation that banned the same practices.

Besides the horrific caribou slaughtering methods that would be permitted, the rollback would also allow hunters to “lure brown and black bears with bait, hunt black bears and their cubs using artificial lights, […], and use dogs to hunt black bears.”

Take a Stand to Protect Alaska’s Bears and Wolves!

Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke has directed the National Park Service (NPS) to allow extreme hunting methods in Alaska’s national preserves, like baiting brown bears, killing black bear mothers and cubs in dens, and killing wolves and pups by trapping during denning season. This is shameful and outrageous.

Take Action to support Sainsbury’s shop floor staff’s working rights and other matters.

“A fair days work for a fair days pay” motto of the American Federation of Labor.

Over 9,000 of Sainsburys staff are to loose up to £3,000 per year as a result of pay changes including a loss of paid breaks, the Sunday and bank holiday premium and a shortening of night shift hours where staff will only be paid nightshift rates between 12am to 5am. A bonus is also set to be scrapped.

However there’s money for a £1.8 million share bonus for CEO Mike Coupe as 9,000 staff who do the real work are set to lose up to £3,000 per year.

Support Sainsbury’s shop floor staff’s working rights. We’re NOT in the money

In March, Sainsbury’s announced wholesale contract changes across the organisation and spun them to the media as an ‘increase in basic pay’. But, because of these changes, I will be one of the thousands of long standing and loyal Sainsbury’s staff who will see our wages plummet.

Here is the reality for shopfloor staff like me:

  • Those of us who work unsociable hours over weekends will see our earnings slashed.
  • Those of us who work through the night will only receive nightshift pay between 12am and 5am.
  • We’ll all lose our bonuses (although not our “we’re in the money” CEO).
  • We’ll no longer be paid through our breaks.
  • And if we don’t accept the changes by September, then Sainsbury’s will dismiss us from our jobs.

I personally stand to lose over £1,000 per year. Some of my colleagues will lose as much as £3,000.

The Living Wage: it’s time big supermarkets paid it.

https://actions.sumofus.org/a/the-living-wage-it-s-time-big-supermarkets-paid-it

Its all about money of course, increasing profits, nothing else seems to matter nowadays and the people who actually make a contribution to the functioning and well being of society get paid the least while big businesses and corporations exploit them and all us for huge profits.   These insatiably greedy supermarkets and food producers exploit staff with low wages for long hours while selling produce and commodities vital to life at huge prices which increase in significant increments day after day. Frankly food, without which we would all not survive for long of course, should not be sold for profit, doing so leaves many people worldwide hungry, malnourished, starving, including right here in the UK thanks to Tory austerity measures, including vicious cuts to benefits for disabled, sick and unemployed people . Low wages also are common place,  an obvious method of exploitation which leaves thousands of people needing to use food banks. The whole system sickens me. We need a fair world with a fair distribution of food not dependent on how much money you have or otherwise. While this may not happen in the foreseeable future as capitalism has such a tight grip on people’s hearts and minds, but hopefully one day, one day, no one will go hungry, struggle to feed or clothe themselves or secure a home, no one will work for inadequate wages yet go to bed hungry or live on the pittance of government handouts increasing cut . However for now we must fight the system that is allowing others to exploit so many of us and take as much action as you can even it if is only to sign a petition or write a letter.

What with one thing and another as a customer of Salisbury’s I am seriously considering taking my custom elsewhere.

Here is the latest outrage!  The DWP (Department of Works and pensions) are colluding with Sainsbury’s to spy on benefit claimants including disabled people!!!! You couldn’t make it up. UNBELIEVABLE!

Read more information from the Canary

“The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has been colluding with Sainsbury’s to spy on welfare claimants and disabled people.

The DWP: in bed with Sainsbury’s?

“CCTV screens are being placed above self-service checkouts in hundreds of supermarkets across the UK.”

“The UK has a ‘hostile environment’ where welfare claimants and disabled people live under a cloud of suspicion and unworthiness. It’s this which makes Sainsbury’s colluding with the DWP all the more concerning. If we have reached the point where welfare recipients can’t even do their shopping without fear of being ‘shopped’ to the DWP, then the system is even more broken than we thought.”

Extracts from the Canary article

The DWP has been colluding with Sainsbury’s to spy on disabled people

Please read the entire article and take the action suggested

https://www.thecanary.co/trending/2018/05/29/the-dwp-has-been-colluding-with-sainsburys-to-spy-on-disabled-people/

All very worrying to say the least, having lived in a time when such shocking invasion of a privacy was unthinkable outside Orwells book 1984 it comes as a huge shock.

Another worry concerning the ‘creepy’ CCTV screens placed above self-service checkouts as shoppers claim some key pads are clearly exposed if entering pin numbers. Read the article below for more information:

Sainsbury’s customers voice concern over ‘creepy’ CCTV screens placed above self-service checkouts

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/sainsburys-cctv-self-service-checkouts-supermarkets-customer-reaction-a8359411.html

The following may also alarm many of us: the UK has the most CCTV cameras than any other country worldwide

I never use self service check outs because firstly it takes jobs away from people and secondly I have no intention of doing unpaid work for Sainsburys – checking out your own purchases is of course unpaid work as you are doing work that Salisbury’s should be employing someone to do. You are making more money for this greedy money grabbing supermarket. The fact that while using self service checkout you are being spied on is yet another reason to avoid them.

Concerning pay, it is of no use to raise wages but take away unpaid tea breaks, additional pay for working unsociable hours and reduce nightshift increased payments to between between 12am and 5am only.
