All Animals Deserve to Live And to Live as Nature Intended.

The earth is not ours to do with as we please, we share this earth with an estimated 8.7 million other species,  the vast majority have not been identified – and cataloguing them all could take more than 1,000 years. Yes we share this earth, the earth is not ours and the other animals who inhabit this world are not here for our convenience, they do not exist for food, clothing, entertainment, experimentation or for use as labour.

Animals for meat, fur and wool

The millions of species of nonhuman animals do not exist to provide you with food that you do not need and is not natural. You do not have the anatomy of a carnivore, even Plutarch recognised this obvious fact some 2,000 years ago when he said:

…it is absurd for them to say that the practise of flesh-eating is based on nature. For that man is not naturally carnivorous is, in the first place, obvious from the structure of his body. A mans frame is in no way similar to those creatures who were made for flesh-eating; he has no hooked beak or sharp nails or jagged teeth, no strong stomach or warmth of vital fluids able to digest and assimilate a heavy diet of flesh. It is from the very fact, the evenness of our teeth, the smallness of our mouths, the softness of our tongues, our possession of vital fluids too inert to digest meat that nature disavows our eating of flesh. If you declare that you are naturally designed for such a diet, than first kill for yourself what you want to eat. Do, it however, only through your own resources, unaided by cleaver or cudgel of any kind or axe. Rather, just as wolves and bears and lions themselves slay what they eat, so you are to fell an ox with your fangs or a boar with your jaws, or tear a lamb or hare in bits. Fall upon it and eat it still living, as animals do. But if you wait for what you eat to be dead, if you have qualms about enjoying the flesh while life is still present, why do you continue, contrary to nature, to eat what possesses life? Even when it is lifeless and dead, however, no one eats the flesh just as it is; men boil it and roast it, altering it by fire and drugs, recasting and diverting and smothering with countless condiments the taste of gore so that the palate may be deceived and accept what is foreign to it.

If you eat meat consider the points that Plutarch made centuries ago, ask yourself what other animal cooks its food to make it edible, the fact that you need to cook meat is an indication that this food is not natural for humans.

Animals have their own lives, their own natures and purposes. A rabbit, a mink or a fox, to name just a few of the unfortunate creatures to be killed to provide some humans with a fur coat, are not on this earth for that purpose. The fur of these animals belongs to the creature who was born with it. Way back in time the killing of animals for meat or fur was the only option available, but now no human on earth needs meat or fur or the wool of sheep. Yet the fur trade thrives throughout the world with millions of animals killed for their fur to satisfy human greed and fickle fashion.

Read more about the horror and cruelty of the Barbaric Fur Trade:
https://www.peta.org.uk/issues/animals-not-wear/fur-trade/

Each year, more than 1 billion rabbits and 50 million other animals — including foxes, seals, mink and dogs — are raised on fur farms or trapped in the wild and killed for their pelts.

Fur and wool are now easily replaced by synthetic materials which are warmer and more hard wearing and yes for the fickle followers of fashion who are prepared to kill another animal for their vanity, natural fabrics appear very similar, so similar in fact it is virtually impossible to tell the difference. Meat of course is no longer required, eating meat is now a detriment not only to animals but to other humans: Did you know that if “If the whole world became vegan, there would be plenty food to feed all of us””more than 6.3 billion people.”

“In order to ensure that every person on the planet has enough food to eat, and ultimately protect our own survival, humans must look deep within themselves and choose the path that is the most compassionate, healthy, and sustainable. That path is veganism.”
http://gentleworld.org/could-veganism-end-world-hunger/

Meat is also a detriment to our environment, for example 51 percent or more of global greenhouse-gas emissions are caused by animal agriculture, eating meat causes pollution and uses up huge amounts of water to name just a few of the problems to our environment we ignore in order for wealthy people in western countries to eat meat.

Meat and the environment:
https://www.peta.org/issues/animals-used-for-food/meat-environment/

Most importantly meat is a detriment to animals

“Over 56 billion farmed animals are killed every year by humans. These shocking figures do not even include fish and other sea creatures whose deaths are so great they are only measured in tonnes.”
http://www.animalequality.net/food

Over one billion animals are killed in the UK alone each year and there are 278 slaughter houses:

The Slaughter of Farm Animals in the UK
https://www.viva.org.uk/what-we-do/slaughter/slaughter-farmed-animals-uk

Indeed it breaks your heart that those affectionate calves will soon be killed in order for you who eat meat, to consume a food that you do not need and is now merely a luxury, which not only causes the harm mentioned above but is for you the meat-eater a serious detriment to your health and well being.

Also keep in mind that in many countries both dogs and cats are killed for meat. It was estimated in 2014 that worldwide, 25 million dogs are eaten each year by humans. In China alone roughly 20 million dogs are killed for consumption each year, making China the world’s largest consumer of dog meat.

Animals as Entertainment

Whether it’s circuses, zoos, horse or dog racing or even here in the UK the bizarre but ever more popular sheep racing, hunting, shooting, fishing, the use of animals for entertainment is wrong. As Rodger Moore quoted above says there are now “boundless opportunities for amusement“, circuses and other animal entertainment including the obviously sickening pastime of blood sports are now anachronisms of a bygone age and are barbaric abuses of sentient beings, animals who have as much right to live their lives as they so please, as nature intended not as an adjunct to human activity.

Below is a petition which shows that even sheep cannot escape being used and abused in so called entertainment;

Animals as use in experimentation

“Once one allows that animals are part of the moral community…then one’s act of inflicting pain and suffering upon them or killing them must be justified…

In my view pain is pain, as much evil for an animal as for a human, and I agree with animal liberationists that it is a form of speciesism or discrimination to pretend otherwise.”

R. Frey, ‘The ethics of the search for benefits: Experimentation in medicine’, in Principles of Health Care Ethics, ed. by R. Gillon (Chichester: John Wiley, 1994), pp.1068-69.

Nothing shames the human species as its use of helpless animals for experimentation. There is no excuse for this cruelty, no justification, whether it is testing a defenceless rabbit, guinea pig, or rat for cosmetic or medical purposes for which in addition to the aforementioned animals primates may be used, also dogs and cats in medical testing. Life is precious to any animal as your life is to you, what right have any human to assert that their life is more important than that of another animal.

In the process of experimentation animals suffer both physically and psychologically as much as humans or maybe even more so, in fact Richard Dawkins asserts that our non human, animal cousins may be “capable of feeling more intense pain than we are.”

Right now, millions of mice, rats, rabbits, primates, cats, dogs, and other animals are locked inside barren cages in laboratories across the country. They languish in pain, ache with loneliness, and long to be free.

Instead, all they can do is sit and wait in fear of the next terrifying and painful procedure that will be performed on them. The complete lack of environmental enrichment and the stress of their living situation cause some animals to develop neurotic types of behavior such as incessantly spinning in circles, rocking back and forth, pulling out their own fur, and even biting themselves. After enduring a life of pain, loneliness, and terror, almost all of them will be killed.

Read the truth about the hideously cruel experiments inflicted on helpless animals and why they are unnecessary.

Animal Testing 101
https://www.peta.org/issues/animals-used-for-experimentation/animal-testing-101/

My own opinion is simple, there is no excuse ever and no reason that can ever justify such cruelty because animals have as much right to their lives as we do , and moreover to live their lives without the negative interference of humans, if is after all their world also .

This link has a wealth of quotations regarding the ethics of animal experiments such as the following, which in my opinion is one of the main reasons that still today animals suffer the agonies of experimentation.

“Results from animal tests are not transferable between species, and therefore cannot guarantee product safety for humans…

In reality these tests do not provide protection for consumers from unsafe products, but rather they are used to protect corporations from legal liability.”

Herbert Gundersheimer, M.D., Baltimore, Maryland, 1988.

Animals as Labour

In the modern age there are few tasks now that need the labour of an animal, yet still animals are used in warfare, the enforcement of law, to provide transport, carry goods and so on. Such labour may cause exhaustion, often physical pain, for example if animals are used to carry heavy loads, which is still the case in many parts of the world today. Animals may often be made to comply by the use of whips and other violent forms of coercion. Animals used by law enforcement or the military are exposed to danger and death, remember unlike policemen or women or a soldier the animal has no choice. Not only is this physically exhausting and stressful but at the end of the animal’s useful life he or she is more than likely to be killed if they have not already died of exhaustion.

For detailed information concerning the many uses and abuses of animals used for labour the following article is  recommend

Animals used as workers

You can also read here in this blog about the plight of animals used in warfare:

How War Affects Animals

During WW1 eight million working horses lost their lives, along with countless donkeys and mules. Also one million dogs and pigeons and other birds whose numbers are not known. During this war 16 million innocent animals with no say in or understanding of the matter were forced into war. During the  the battle of Verdun in 1916 7,000 horses died in one day alone.

Animals as Pets

Animals used as Pets may well come under the category of animals used as entertainment but it a bit more complex and less clear cut than that as often these animals provide companionship. Regarding the word pet I prefer the term companion animal, but for ease of writing I will use the word pet which is often an endearment also used to imply fondness of our fellow humans, so for some of us it does not have the same negative connotations.

In a perfect world no animal should be kept as a pet, and I wish this situation did not exist, but this is by no means an ideal world and the domestication of dogs and cats and other animals has progressed beyond the point of turning back. The opposition by many animal rights advocates including myself towards keeping a companion animal should not be considered as a call to release domesticated animals. Domesticated animals such as dogs, cats, rabbits and so on are now dependent on us for their survival, it would not be in the best interests of these animals to release them into the wild or let them lose in our streets where in both cases they would starve to death or come to other harm.

Moreover no advocate of animal rights wishes to remove companion animals from their homes. However we have a moral duty to take responsible care of the animals that we take into our homes and you will find that many animal rights activists and supporters have companion animals or take into their homes rescued animals in need of care. The stance by many animal rights activists is that companion animals who are already here should live long, healthy lives, in as natural a way as is possible, cared for with love and respect by the humans who take them into their homes as their guardians rather than their owners. I would personally like to see the phasing out of confined animals as pets such as rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, rats, fish, reptiles and end deliberate breeding of such creatures as companion animals. These creatures still exist in the wild where they should remain to live the lives that nature intends.

The above is my position on the subject of pets adapted from my website’s statement on Animal Rights. You can read the entire statement by clicking the following link and scrolling down to the section Companion Animals (pets):
http://think-differently-about-sheep.com/Animal_Rights_Our_Statement.htm

Having a pet or pets is a difficult subject and there are many conflicting opinions. I had three pet rabbits whom a miss very much. However all three came from rescue situations and needed homes. Whatever you decide regarding caring for a pet please adopt one from an animal rescue, if you live in the UK you can also go to the RSPCA who have many unwanted animals for adoption.

https://www.rspca.org.uk/findapet

Please do not buy from a pet store and most certainly not backstreet breeders as this perpetuates the trade in and breeding of animals.

Please do not adopt an animal you cannot adequately care for or can afford, keep in mind vets fees can be considerable but a vital part of an animal’s well being and here in the UK a legal requirement. More advice is available in the above link.

There are just so many ways that animals are used by humans, some less of a problem than others but I firmly believe that in general animals are better off in their own environments to live their own lives as nature intended and are most certainly not here to feed you, clothe you, entertain you or keep you company, unless they so desire, or for use as labour. Life is as important to an animal as our lives are to us , it is their world to and each and every creature has a right to be here regardless of how useful or otherwise they are to humans.

The Silence of the Innocents

Below is a guest post by the animal and human rights activist and supporter of free software Luis Leonel.

THE SILENCE OF THE INNOCENTS

Karen Szewc and John Updegraff began breeding Tibetan Mastiffs to protect their sheep from predators at their home in Rouge River, Oregon, United States.

But they bark too much when left alone for long periods of time, according to Updegraff’s neighbors, Debra and Dale Krein. Then, they decided to sue them.

This Wednesday an Oregon appeals court consisting of the judges Joel DeVore, Chris Garrett and Bronson James agreed that the owners must surgically damage or remove the vocal cords of their dogs in order to reduce their ability to vocalize, in a procedure known as “ventriculocordectomy”, “debarking” or “devocalization”.

Debarking is controversial because barking is normal behavior for a dog and an important way of communicating with those around them. The damage or mutilation of the vocal cords can result in a dog experiencing permanent distress and, consequently, psychological harm, by their lack of ability to sound an appropriate warning as they feel necessary.

Charlottesville: Ways To Help

Racist organisations like the KKK, neo-nazis and white supremacists should be banned. Racism or any discrimination, hate speech and violence have no place in any civilised society. No one should have the freedom to incite hatred and promote inequality. It’s not freedom of speech, it’s a crime. No society should tolerate, racism or any kind of hate fueled rhetoric, bigotry and intolerance.

Enough Is Enough: White Nationalism Should Not Be a Protected Form of Free Speech

“Groups like the Ku Klux Klan and Unite The Right are not mere political groups. They are hate groups who have, for a century — or, in the KKK’s case, much longer — openly advocated violence and terror as a means of achieving their agendas. These individuals maintain views that quite literally align with the Nazis who tried to conquer Europe, with a key goal being the extermination and enslavement of “inferior” races, like Jews and Slavs.”

Why the hell can’t we all learn to live together regardless of race, creed, gender or any other perceived difference. There is so much misery in the world, I cannot understand why people such as these vile excuse for human beings have to create more. Wouldn’t the world be a better place if equality, tolerance and acceptance of each person was common place. Human beings should have no enemies other than death and disease, certainly not each other. Yet racism and other intolerance thrives and is on the increase along with the insatiable greed of the few at the expense of the many. We should unite for a better world where inequality, intolerance, social injustice, racism and any other prejudices are a thing of the past, a world where we can live out our lives in peace promoting the common good of all, including the other species with whom we share this world, and put all our energies in preserving this planet for all, including future generations.

Take Action

Please check out Care2’s suggestions for how you can help Charlottesville in the aftermath of this terrible incident of open racism, bigotry and hate.

It’s Up to Us to Stop White Supremacist Rallies Throughout America

“…mobilize your communities to get white supremacists out, because community resistance works.

Organizers successfully shut down a rally in Colorado Springs, another at Texas A&M, and one in Richmond to protest the removal of Confederate monuments. The “peaceful” March on Google, organized by white supremacists in nine different cities, following the firing of James Damore has also been canceled!

Below, you’ll find a list of upcoming white supremacist rallies in the United States. Add your name to petitions calling for permit denials — and if there isn’t a petition yet, start one! Join us in saying good night to the self-described “alt-right“!”

There is some way most of us can help including signing the following petition:

Petition

Label the “KKK” a terrorist organization!

“The KKK is a HATE group responsible for the deaths of hundreds of people of color through the decades. The recent deadly events in Charlottesville make it clear that members of these groups are willing to kill to advance their efforts to start a race war. ”

Please read more, sign and share this petition. Groups such as the KKK have no place in any modern society. There hate fill rhetoric incitements to violence and the acts of violence perpetrated or encourage by them are crimes and it is time they were recognised as such.

Please read the following, which over the weekend was Care2’s Daily Action and features a Human Rights Campaign video, and share widely, the world needs to know these are not “fine people” but racist fascist thugs who must not become an accepted part of American society.

Donald Trump: These Are Not “Fine People”

“Last weekend the world watched in horror as white supremacists, neo-nazis, and KKK members marched with torches and violently clashed with anti-fascist protestors in Virginia.

Instead of condemning hate, President Trump has blamed “both sides” for violence, and criticized the media’s coverage of the violent event, even going as far to say there were “very fine people” at the rally.

Video shows that this isn’t the case. White supremacists shouted racial and homophobic chants and insults to protestors, and one woman was killed when a White supremacist purposefully drove his car through a group of peaceful demonstrators.

There is only one side spewing hate. Watch the Human Rights Campaign video and share with your networks.

It is important to note that there are many people who oppose racism.

Tories Out: Protest the Tory Conference

The world is now ever more turbulent and it is increasingly more difficult to know where to begin to protest the onslaught as equality, social justice, decency, compassion fight against a seething mass of bigotry, social injustice, racism, right wing subjugation of the poor, increased abuse of animals, war … well the list is just so long. The headlines, as biased to the right as they are here in the UK, mostly seem more interested in Sport, the new opiate of the people,  than much else. Seemingly sport is more important  than the misery mostly inflicted by the right wing and those of right wing mentality – the other night a sports segment on the BBC came before any mention of the fiasco in North Korea where two psychopaths who hold so much power rattle their sabres with the resulting possibility of  leading us to the brink of nuclear war.

Undercover of all this the Tories continue their agenda with increasingly more austerity as if the disaster of Grenville Tower, the result of austerity, greed and neglect had never happened.

Right wing political ideology, particularly in its extremes as is the case today, will never bring about social justice, a fair world and a just society, it therefore must be eliminated permanently.

The world it seems is becoming more right wing, more fascist, racist and intolerant and the struggle to procure a decent existence for us all more of a challenge. I am shocked by the displays of open racism in the USA, the violence, hate, bigotry and intolerance.   What an appalling display of hate in Charlottesville as an ugly crowd of vile racist thugs, emboldened by the bigoted rhetoric of Trump’s extreme right wing agenda, wreaked mayhem. Such has no place in the modern world, it is sickening to every decent person.

We need to bring about change in the world urgently including here in the UK. We need to stop the spread of the right wing chaos that is making the lives of millions a living nightmare.

We have to keep speaking out against the rise in right wing agendas which are changing our world, taking it back to a time we once thought had passed into history.

Here the Tories systematic destruction of our social progress seems to go unnoticed lately.

We must do all we can short of violence to rid ourselves of this blight to humanity (namely RIGHT WING POLITICS) the other species with whom we share this world and the plant itself if we are to ever have a decent existence which values the right to life, and a good quality of life, for every being that exists. Ousting the Tories and replacing with a real socialist Jeremy Corbyn is a good way to start.

It’s approaching That Time again The Glorious Twelfth

When I was twelve, I went hunting with my father and we shot a bird. He was laying there and something struck me. Why do we call this fun to kill this creature [who] was as happy as I was when I woke up this morning.
Marv Levy

If you don’t have time to read the information below but would like to bring an end to grouse shooting scroll down for action you can take, including two demonstrations on the 12th August.

It’s approaching that time again, the so called  Glorious Twelfth (August 12th), the beginning of the Grouse shooting season. I have written about this atrocity of barbarism several times in this blog here here and the latest here

From beasts we scorn as soulless,
In forest, field and den,
The cry goes up to witness
The soullessness of men.
M. Frida Hartley

As I have said time and time again I cannot understand the mentality, the cold indifference to taking the life of another sentient creature by hunting or shooting, but to get pleasure from doing so is even more baffling.

Moreover few people who participate in blood sports ever question that there is anything wrong with killing animals for fun. In the video below the shooter shoots from the sky a beautiful bird in full fight, ending the life of this defenseless unsuspecting creature simply for pleasure. It turns my stomach, makes me sick inside as it does most people. That is why the majority of people in the UK and worldwide would rather see an end to such wanton killing as a result of so called sport.

Grouse Shooting is the sport of kings says the shooter in this video.

The sport of kings indeed, is this saying meant to elevate this cruelty? Hunting and shooting is more like the sport of psychopaths! It is sickening that anyone can glorify such a vile act of cruelty against other feeling thinking sentient beings. It shames us as a nation that we allow this barbarity to continue.  To be fair there may be a few who simply fail to comprehend what they do and there are those who even give up blood sports  however for the majority it is a much anticipated pass time undertaken with disregard to the suffering caused.

Wild animals never kill for sport. Man is the only one to whom the torture and death of his fellow-creatures is amusing in itself.
James Anthony Froude,

The reality of grouse shooting

While for many people grouse shooting is deemed undesirable because of the harm it does to other creatures – including Hen Harriers and Peregrines as is emphasis of the video below – it has be said that grouse shooting is inhumane simply because it kills 700,000 grouse each year.   All animals to my mind are equal and for each individual animal his or her life is important. However if the concern over the killing of endangered species rather than the grouse itself brings about an end to grouse shooting all well and good. The important thing is that no animal is harmed or killed whether it is a grouse, a fox or a hen harrier.

A number of animals are killed deliberately because for one reason or another their existence interferes with the number of grouse available for shooters to use as living targets.

Published on Jul 7, 2017

“This film sets out the case for banning driven grouse shooting both on the grounds of its dependence on the illegal killing of birds of prey and for its wider impacts.”

So you see it is not only the unfortunate tiny grouse who are killed or harmed and left to die a slow painful death but other wild animals and even domestic animals become victims of this outdated cruelty of a bygone age.

Look carefully at the photo in the tweet below a  vehicle filled with beautiful mountain hares murdered –  yes I am going to say murdered what else is it – in order to protect grouse from hare-born disease. Basically killing one animal in order to have plenty of another animal to kill, simply for pleasure.

Humans also get maimed or killed participating in blood sports such as hunting and shooting. There are no statistics for the UK . However as far as I can ascertain there have been fatalities here.  A woman in Oxford back in March 2016 was left shaken after deer hunting accident when a bullet was shot through her window.  Whilst no one was injured things most certainly could have been quite different. There have also been significant and serious incidences of hikers killed during hunting in the USA and Canada,   Also in Italy during, a four month period 35 people were killed in hunting accidents. It can only be a matter of time before something like this happens here, in areas such as the Yorkshire and Durham Dales the Yorkshire Moors, anywhere where people have the right of way there is always that risk.

Concerning the UK and indeed world wide the licensing of guns to hunters and shooters puts a deadly weapon into the hands of people who have violent tendencies – there is surely no one who can argue that hunting and shooting is not an act of violence.  It is bizarre when you think about it but most licenses are issued to people to kill animals, though some licenses of course are issued to people for sports such as clay pigeon shooting. Here in the UK 567,015 people have a shotgun license ,  any one of them can use their weapon to kill not only helpless animals but people also, as was the case of Derrick Bird in Cumbria who shot twelve people with the gun he used to kill rabbits. Make no mistake these are deadly weapons which maim and kill helpless animals with the potential of killing defenseless humans also. The less weapons in public hands the less the chances of people being killed.

The following article includes a short video of the cruel and untimely death of animals killed by a gamekeeper in one of the UK’s National Parks. These animals are deemed to interfere with the numbers of grouse available for the shooters to kill.

Footage shows animals trapped and shot in a UK national park

Warning images which some people may find disturbing.
http://www.aol.co.uk/travel/2017/07/11/footage-animals-trapped-shot-uk-peak-district-national-park/?ncid=webmail

I found the images upsetting, sickening as I find it disturbing that anyone can wantonly shoot helpless animals who have as much right to their lives as the person who shoots them, as do the grouse and every other being that lives.

Vast areas of our countryside are managed in this way to prepare for the massacre of these tiny helpless birds for no other reason than some disturbed sense of pleasure and enjoyment.

Why should a large percentage of our countryside be used and it’s inhabitants abused simply to satisfy the bloodlust of a very small group of over privileged people to kill helpless wild animals simply for enjoyment for four months of each year. Shooters are wealthy, some extraordinarily so as are the people who profit from organised shoots. A few years ago now while in a pub in the Yorkshire Dales my husband and I got into conversation with a former sheep farmer who was now retired. He told us that he had sold his land for the purpose of shooting as he was approached to do so and made an offer he could not refuse. A considerable amount I assume paid simply to have access to the land for four months of the year just to kill helpless birds, shoot them from the sky after driving them into the line of fire by terrifying them by a method referred to as grouse beating – hunting for grouse by trying to drive them towards the shooter by using flags, sticks, and other devices.

As long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other.

Ten Reasons to oppose grouse shooting – note the petition is now closed
http://markavery.info/2014/06/05/ten-reasons-sign-epetition-ban-driven-grouse-shooting-england/     – The most important reason in my opinion is that the grouse are sentient beings and have the right to live as do all the other creature mained and killed during the preparation for grouse shooting.

While shooting and hunting are categorized differently they amount to the same thing and that is wanton violence and the massacre of defenseless sentient creatures for fun.

The article below from PETA focuses on reasons why hunting is cruel and nowadays unnecessary. The same is the case for grouse shooting

“Hunting accidents destroy property and injure or kill horses, cows, dogs, cats, hikers, and other hunters. In 2006, then–Vice President Dick Cheney famously shot a friend while hunting quail on a canned hunting preserve.16 According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, thousands of injuries are attributed to hunting in the U.S. every year—and that number only includes incidents involving humans.17″

Actions you can take to end grouse shooting.

There is limited organised action and as far as I am aware no current petitions. The last petition resulted in a debate in parliament but despite 123,077 signatures failed to bring about a ban on grouse shooting

Here is what I have been able to find, please take action if you possibly can.

At least the Bradford District council warn people of shooting.

In the Yorkshire and Durham dales which my family visit frequently for walking and just enjoying the countryside there are no such warnings. You can suddenly came across a shooting party in proximity to a popular foot path. While it offers an opportunity to express your opposition this is distressing for many people and could be a safety hazard. On one occasion police ignored our reports of shooters worrying sheep chasing after them in an attempt to remove them from the area saying that there was nothing they could do.

Continue to write to your MP

http://www.parliament.uk/get-involved/contact-your-mp/

It may well be a challenge to say the least particularly if your MP is conservative as the Tories tend to support blood sports, this is probably because a good majority participate in them and they therefore continue to put their own pleasures first, however dubious or unethical, before those of the vast majority who wish to see an end to such barbarities as shooting and hunting. Nonetheless please be persistent keep in mind fox hunting was eventually banned as a result of public pressure.

Grouse

“According to industry statistics an estimated 700,000 grouse are shot every year in Britain for ‘sport’ all over the UK. In driven shooting, red grouse are frightened from their heather homes by a line of beaters shouting and stomping to drive them towards eagerly awaiting men with guns. The grouse don’t stand a chance, as it is basically a massacre. Many will not be killed outright, but will be shot and wounded before hurtling to the ground where they will lie maimed, suffering and terrified.”

Whats Wrong with Grouse shooting

  1. Grouse shooting is a bloodsport People pay vast sums of money (1000-2000 a day) to blast a sentient creature out of the sky for enjoyment. A creature that has been driven towards them to make it easier. Whether or not money changes hands is not the issue though – shooting or hunting animals for amusement is something the Hunt Saboteurs Association is unequivocally opposed to. Grouse are known as the king of gamebirds because of their fast flight. This speed makes a clean kill difficult and results in birds being shot without instantly falling to the ground, and many fly on wounded.

“Well done Terry Pickford for speaking the truth, exposing what gamekeepers would obviously prefer no-one to know. It is a terribly sad situation, but I for one must applaud your efforts over the last 4 decades, working to support and protect Hen Harriers and Peregrine Falcons in the Forest of Bowland, under such difficult circumstances. ” The petition referred to failed.

Mickey Rourke a Champion For Animals.

Below is a guest post by the animal and human rights activist and supporter of free software Luis Leonel.

THE GREAT MICKEY ROURKE

Philip Andre “Mickey” Rourke Jr. is not only one of the greatest actor of his generation. Also, he is a real gentleman and a champion for animals.

When he was asked by Barbara Walters if he had considered suicide, he replied:

“Yeah, I didn’t want to be here, but I didn’t want to kill myself. I just wanted to push a button and disappear…. I think I hadn’t left the house for four or five months, and I was sitting in the closet, sleeping in the closet for some reason, and I was in a bad place, and I just remember I was thinking, ‘Oh, man, if I do this,’ [and] then I looked at my dog, Beau Jack, and he made a sound, like a little almost human sound. I don’t have kids, the dogs became everything to me. The dog was looking at me going, ‘Who’s going to take care of me?'”

Urgent Action to Stop Executions in The Maldives

One of the most barbarous social injustices is capital punishment and in the modern world it is time this was eradicated for good. Most certainly it should not be reintroduced after a period of sixty years!

Please take the urgent action below and share widely

Three men in the Maldives face death by hanging ‘in the next few days.

Please take the following action to urge the government of the Maldives to stop the executions

Urge the maldives to stop all executions immediately:
https://www.amnesty.org.uk/actions/urgent-stop-executions-maldives

More Information from Amnesty International

“The Minister of Home Affairs Azleen Ahmed announced this week that the Maldives will start executing people again ‘in the next few days’, leaving three men on death row who have exhausted all legal avenues at imminent risk.”

“On the wrong side of history

For more than sixty years, the Maldives led the way in the Asia-Pacific region by shunning this inhuman form of punishment. Yet now, when most of the world has turned its back on the sickening death penalty, the popular tropical nation risks being on the wrong side of history and earning global notoriety for re-instating its use of barbaric executions. ”

“Lives are too precious

The Maldives has also agreed to cooperate with the Human Rights Committee. Should they go ahead with the executions, they would be breaking international law, including their duty to protect the three men’s right to life.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. People’s lives are too precious to be ended with such cruel haste, and the Maldives still has time to turn back.

Join us now in urging the Maldives to stop any plans to resume executions, with a view to abolishing the death penalty altogether. “
