Speak Out For Sheep Exploited For Their Wool

The exciting news right now is that Norway are Banning Fur Farming!

Norway has 300 fur farms, which breed and kill approximately 700,000 minks and 110,000 foxes every year, so this is a significant progress for the rights of animals not to be exploited abused and killed simply for fashion or to produce garments which are no longer necessary in modern times when there are so many synthetic cruelty free alternatives.

We need also to turn our attention to the plight of sheep, who for many people seem less obvious victims of abuse concerning their exploitation for wool, yet another product that is not necessary and like fur involves horrific abuse

Please take action and help prevent animal cruelty in the wool industry as sheep are abused and killed for their wool.

Please help to save defencess sheep from this shocking brutality by sending a message to Urge Express and Forever 21 to drop wool in favour of animal-friendly materials.

PETA’s SEVENTH Wool Exposé: Sheep Still Hit, Kicked, Cut, Thrown

“A disturbing new PETA video exposé of the Australian wool industry—the world’s top wool exporter—reveals that extreme cruelty to sheep continues unabated. Exposés in dozens of shearing sheds on three continents show workers punch, kick, cut up, stomp on, mutilate, and throw sheep down chutes like garbage bags.

This latest exposé shows more of the same—sheep shearers in Australia violently punched these gentle animals in the face and beat and jabbed them in the head with sharp metal shears. The attacks often left the petrified sheep bleeding from the eyes, nose, and mouth.

After PETA exposed rampant extreme cruelty to sheep across Australia in 2014, the video evidence resulted in landmark cruelty convictions against shearers, and the wool industry assured the public that such abuse would no longer be tolerated. But as this exposé shows, absolutely nothing has changed for sheep, and the cruelty is as severe as ever.”

You can also help sheep by refusing to buy wool.

Leave wool and other clothing derived from animals such as mohair and fur out of your wardrobe. There are humane modern fabrics such as cotton, rayon, acrylic, hemp and nylon. Modern synthetic fibres are more versatile, warmer, easy to care for and most importantly humane.

I have a fondness for timid gentle sheep whom I often see grazing in the countryside close to where I live, out in all weathers often suffering injuries, neglected, open to the elements, predators and all manner of hazards. Sheep suffer like all farm animals for products we do not need, namely meat and wool.

Please help sheep by changing to a vegan lifestyle and keep wool out of your wardrobe and meat off your plate.

The Wool Industry

“Sheep are gentle individuals who, like all animals, feel pain, fear, and loneliness. But because there’s a market for their fleece and skins, they’re treated as nothing more than wool-producing machines.

If they were left alone and not genetically manipulated, sheep would grow just enough wool to protect themselves from temperature extremes. The fleece provides them with effective insulation against both cold and heat.”

Though the next article was written back in 2014  the brutality continues, nothing has changed for sheep exploited by the wool industry.

A wool jumper is just as cruel as a mink coat

A Peta film shows workers who beat, kick, stamp on, throw, mutilate and even kill sheep as they shear them

“The investigators saw shearers violently punch struggling sheep, and beat and jab them in the face with sharp shears, leaving the gentle animals bleeding from their eyes, nose and mouth. One shearer repeatedly twisted and bent a sheep’s neck, finally breaking it.”

“Most shearers are paid by volume, not by the hour, which means that they have an incentive to work as quickly as they can, with little regard for the sheep’s welfare. Investigators recorded shearers who processed up to 27 sheep per hour and up to 35 lambs. Such fast and often violent work can lead to severe cuts on sheep’s abdomens, hindquarters and limbs – even on sheep’s penises. Large swaths of skin were also cut or ripped off the bodies of many sheep by the shearers.

“…injured sheep were shot dead in full view of their companions, and one was even butchered and left in full view of other terrified sheep.”

Please Take Action to Help Sheep

As anyone who has visited my website will know I am very fond of sheep, one of the most gentle of animals on the planet. The shocking cruelty below sickens me, it is one of the many atrocities inflicted upon these defenceless animals, it is brutal and unnecessary and it has to stop. I say unnecessary but frankly there can never ever be any situation where any cruelty to any animal is necessary.

Please read on and take as many of the suggested actions as possible to bring an end to this horrifying inhumane treatment of sheep

Warning! Disturbing images of cruelty to these defenceless gentle animals

“Two years ago, PETA exposed Patagonia’s wool supplier for skinning sheep who were still alive. Once word got out, the brand stopped buying wool from that supplier and made a list of “stringent” standards for its new suppliers.

Yet once again PETA has exposed disturbing abuse connected to a Patagonia-approved wool producer.

Please read the following and send a message to tell retailer Patagonia to stop selling wool

Patagonia says its mission is to “cause no unnecessary harm,” so why is a wool supplier associated with whipping and mutilating pregnant sheep and forcing them to give birth in a freezing desert on its approved list?

PETA has exposed horrific cruelty at dozens of shearing operations around the world, and our most recent exposé of a Patagonia-approved wool supplier is further proof that any “rigorous” standards or “strong supplier partnerships” are meaningless.”

Shearers pulled heavily pregnant sheep into a trailer and onto the hard floor

In April 2017, PETA observers went to Utah to visit a shearing operation associated with Red Pine Land & Livestock, LLC, which was listed on the company’s website as an approved supplier until the day it saw PETA’s expose. Here’s what that looked like:

Please also take action if you have not already done so concerning Chilean sheep farms:

More Proof the Wool Industry Is HEARTLESS – warning distressing images. How people can be so cruel is beyond my comprehension. Just heartbreaking.

“The cruelty documented on these Chilean sheep farms is not unique, and similar abuses have been documented in the United States, Argentina, and Australia—the world’s largest wool exporter. Please, don’t forget the gentle sheep who suffer in the wool industry all around the world, and choose clothing that doesn’t contain wool. It’s easy to check the label, and if it says “Italian wool”—or any kind of wool—just leave it on the shelf.

Sign our petition urging Chilean officials to prosecute workers who cut into the necks of fully conscious sheep—without doing anything to minimize their pain—in apparent violation of Chile’s animal protection law.

Even in the most ideal situation sheep suffer from exploitation when they are farmed for their wool. The most effective way to bring an end to this aspect of cruelty to sheep is to stop buying wool.

Sheep are sentient beings. Like us they are mammals and like us they feel pain and suffer fear.

In the articles below you can read about sentience in sheep and about the exploitation of these gentle animals.

The following article shows that investigations by animal rights groups such as PETA are effective, however the best way to stop this cruelty is to STOP WEARING WOOL. Be aware that although this prosecution was successful many many similar cases of abuse go uninvestigated and unreported. As already mentioned even in ideal conditions of welfare sheep suffer, they suffer to provide you with a clothing material you now no longer need as synthetic materials are much better, more comfy, warmer and easier to care for.  Sheep also suffer to provide you with a food you do not need. At the end of the day most sheep are brutally slaughtered and most of your wool comes from slaughtered sheep.

Help Stop Animal Experiments: Please Send Messages and Sign Petitions

“Atrocities are not less atrocities when they occur in laboratories and are called medical research.”
George Bernard Shaw

Scroll down for actions to take including petitions. If you don’t have time to read the information below please at least take some of the suggested actions to help stop the awful suffering inflicted on helpless animals in laboratories.

Recently I noticed the following disturbing article about animal testing which adds more support to the many reasons why this shocking cruelty to animals needs to end once and for all, forever. No exceptions, no excuses. The fact that still today we treat helpless innocent animals so appallingly shames us. There is not one country in the world that does experiment on animals. Yes there has been some progress such as the EU’s ban on cosmetic testing, but animals are still used in experiments and medical research and continue to be tested for cosmetics in many countries such as China and the USA.

According to the Huffington post there have been cases of cannibalism, drowning, starvation, pain and distress such as from the lack of anesthesia as a result of neglect by staff in laboratories in the UK. That is of course in addition to all the other horrors of vivisection which our government and others permit as routine and acceptable.

Cannibalism Among ‘Horrendous’ Cases of Animal Testing Neglect Revealed By Home Office Report

Mice who hadn’t been fed for up to four days ate each other.

Please read the complete article:

The answer of course to such neglect and harmful practices is to discontinue animal testing.

Note: “In 2015 there was a 7% rise in the number of experiments conducted on animals in the UK, which anti-vivisection campaigners said made a “mockery” of the government’s pledge to the ‘3Rs’ – replace, reduce and refine the use of animals in scientific research.”

“The number of completed animal experiments rose from 3.87 million in 2014 to 4.14 million the following year.”

That’s right in 2015 4.14 million animals suffered in ways unimaginable and died. That’s here in the UK alone! Each year, more than 100 million animals are killed in laboratories in the USA

The use of animals in experiments including medical research should be banned entirely.

Animals have a right to their lives as we do. To an animal his or her life is important. Animals have a brain and a nervous system, so feel pain, experience fear and suffer much as we would if subjected to the same abuses. We have no right to use animals in this way, there is no ethical justification, there never will be.  We set ourselves above the other creatures with whom we share this planet, but in reality we are no better than any other animal, all animals wish to live, all animals try to avoid pain and suffering. All animal experimentation should come to an end, it’s barbarity at its worse, torture beyond our ability to imagine. Look at the picture of a rabbit at the beginning of the video below fitted with a cannulas, I have shown this before in a previous post because it is just so shocking.

The video below is difficult to watch. Vile wicked evil people, shame on them though I doubt they have the decency to feel shame, let alone compassion or empathy, – guilt also has no part to play in the lives of such callous unfeeling people.

Tell Windex: Stop Animal Testing!  – The list of cruelty by S.C Johnson the makers of Windex in these experiments is utterly sickening

“Windex is a window cleaner company that is manufactured by S.C. Johnson. S.C. Johnson tests the ingredients in Windex on animals in experiments that often result in their death. Each year, more than 100 million animals are abused in the procedures and killed. Please sign this petition to refuse purchasing Windex because the company tests on animals!

S.C. Johnson’s use of animal experimentation is an unethical and inhumane practice where animals such as dogs, rabbits, birds, mice, and monkeys are forced to comply with painful experiments. Some methods that take place during animal testing include:

  • Pouring corrosive chemicals on their bare skin
  • Injecting chemicals into their eyes
  • Repeatedly force fed large substances
  • Forced inhalation of toxic gases”

Do Animals Die Differently in Organic Slaughter Houses?

Below is a guest post by the animal and human rights activist and supporter of free software Luis Leonel.

The images filmed underground at the certified organic slaughterhouse of the commune Vigan in the Gard department in southern France, show the extreme violence in that animals are killed in the same way as in any standard abattoir.

For Nili Hadida, singer of the group Lilly Wood and the Prick who presents the video, “even in a slaughterhouse turned to organic, animals die in suffering. The happy meat does not exist.”

There are very few instances of suffering that can be compared with that which one of these innocent and defenseless animals suffer before dying in this and any slaughterhouse in order to satisfy the consumption of animal flesh by humans.

Animal Abuser: Esperanza Aguirre

Below is a guest post by the animal and human rights activist and supporter of free software Luis Leonel.

The Spanish aristocrat, politician and headhunter, ESPERANZA AGUIRRE, was President of the Community of Madrid from 2003 to 2012 for the corrupt right-wing Partido Popular (People’s Party) and now is the president of that party in Madrid and spokesperson of the Municipal People Group in the City of Madrid. She was even Minister of Education and Culture.

The woman is also a great supporter of animal cruelty in Spain, particularly of bullfighting. As president of Madrid, Aguirre financed bullfighting with public money and declared it of “cultural interest” as an argument to raise subsidies with money from the regional coffers. Only for 2012 her administration budgeted EUR 2.2 millions for “bullfighting affairs.”

In 2013, Esperanza Aguirre wrote “Los Toros” (“The bulls”), a mediocre article in Spanish language in which she glorifies bullfighting and for which she was awarded a prize of EUR 5.000 euros. In that article she says “the bull is the most beautiful animal in the world”. That is why the bull should be tortured and slaughtered Esperanza?

Also, she became the first Spanish woman to date to have been awarded an Honorary Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in February 2004. She, as her admired David Cameron, enjoys the bloody sport of fox hunting.

The video below shows Esperanza Aguirre watching two Spanish teenagers training in the Escuela de Tauromaquia de Madrid, one of the tauromachy schools she subsided when she was President of the Community of Madrid and continues to support. “Madrid is and will remain the world capital of bullfighting,” Aguirre wrote.

And you, Esperanza, are and will remain an animal abuser.

“Cows are amongst the gentlest of breathing creatures; none show more passionate tenderness to their young when deprived of them; and, in short, I am not ashamed to profess a deep love for these quiet creatures.”

“A spiked ring was fastened to this calf’s nostrils to prevent nursing. Rings were sometimes screwed on so tightly and left on for so long that they pierced the tissue between the nostrils.”

Please read the following from PETA. I cannot tell you how shocked I am. That poor calf in the above photo, how cruel, how inhumane to treat a living thinking sentient creature in such an appalling way. And that is not the worse of the treatment these helpless animals suffer at the hands of this milk supplier and no doubt many others. The treatment of these animals is heartbreaking.

Warning Images that some people will find upsetting both further down and also the video and graphics on the link to the petition which is a pledge to go Vegan:

PETA exposé

“The “best-cared for cows on the planet.” That’s the claim made by Daisy Farms, a milk supplier to Daisy Brand sour cream and cottage cheese—products that can be found in supermarkets all over the country (USA). Do conditions on the farm really live up to that claim?

Not according to two eyewitnesses who worked at the farm.

A PETA exposé reveals the hell on Earth experienced by cows in the dairy industry.

Cows were forced to stand and lie in their own waste. They were kicked, whipped, and jabbed with pens and a knife—even while they were in labor. Two cows with severe lacerations on their tails were not treated by a veterinarian, to the knowledge of PETA’s observer, including one cow whose wound was seen bleeding more than three weeks after her tail had been torn in two.

Some sick cows were finally shot, while others were killed by injections to induce a heart attack while they were fully conscious.

As you can see in the video footage, workers pulled calves out of their mothers’ wombs, causing the cows to cry out and defecate. Several newborn calves drowned when workers shoved tubes down their throats and forced milk into their lungs instead of their stomachs. The survivors had their heads smeared with a caustic paste to destroy their sensitive horn tissue—without any anesthetics.

The only way to ensure that no animals suffer for your sour cream, cheese, milk, ice cream, coffee creamer, and yogurt is to go vegan. We can help you every step of the way with free recipes and tips to make the transition an easy one. Won’t you make this simple choice for animals?

Sign our petition and pledge to avoid all animal-derived foods—no matter what feel-good language and photographs a company may use to try to entice you. Wherever profits are the bottom line, corners are cut. And animals pay the price every time.

Together, we can make a difference for cows suffering in the dairy industry. All you have to do is take a moment to take action today.

Sentience in Cattle

Like sheep, pigs and poultry cattle are sentient beings.

Cows are sentient beings, they have feelings, their apparent appearance of docility may simply be an acceptance of their lot in life, docility is often a mark of depression, acceptance or resignation. Cows are not milk making machines spontaneously producing milk at our behest. Like humans, cows in their natural environment and circumstances without our interference lactate only to produce milk for their new born. Cows are very much like ourselves when it comes to their offspring, like us the gestation period is nine months, in their natural environment a calf will suckle for nine to twelve months. Before giving birth in the wild cows will separate themselves from the rest of the herd and hide their calves for several days after giving birth. This is done to prevent intrusion from other females which may interfere with bonding. After only five minutes cows develop a strong bond with their calf so you can understand the trauma of separation, a trauma much like or the same as that experienced by a human mother. Such emotion of this intensity shows that these creatures are sentient, the lament of a cow denied her newborn is one of the most unmistakeable indications of sentience.

Here are two stories of the great bond between mother cows and their offspring.

To complete research for an academic project Valerie Macys needed to examine documents in the study of a charming white farm house next to a cattle farm. A colleague had described it as a place of pastoral serenity with cows peacefully grazing nearby. Prepared for a relaxing visit the reality was to prove quite different

‘I arrived at the house on a late October afternoon. The fall leaves were in full blazing glory, and I noticed that the cows were even closer to the house than I had expected. I could actually hear them before I got out of my car. When I turned off the engine, I knew immediately that something was terribly wrong. I witnessed a scene of chaos. Cows bellowed and stomped, staggering around the fields. They banged into each other and pushed against the fence, located approximately 20 feet from my car. Dozens of them stood wild-eyed, snuffing the air, shrieking horribly. Unfortunately, I knew all too well what their confusion and turmoil was about.”

“They’ve taken your babies,” I said sadly, looking directly into one cow’s mournful eyes. They rolled back in her head as she bellowed anew. Feeling sick to the pit of my stomach, I entered the house and spoke to the curator, who also lives there. Her name is Mary. “Those cows are frantic,” I said. The wailing penetrated even inside. I had never heard anything like it. “How long will this go on?” I asked. “Until tomorrow,” she replied. “Then more slaughter trucks will come for them, and it will all be over.” I thought my heart would hit the floor. I recalled the intense moment when I had stared at the woeful mother cow, practically eyeball to eyeball.”

Nothing really moves me to action like bearing witness, as I did those days in West Virginia. Nothing is more traumatic for me either.

After this experience Valerie Macys stopped eating meat

Please read the rest of this moving story :

Appointment at the End of the World: Valerie Macys

The following two examples describe the incredible resourcefulness and determination on the part of cows to escape death and in one case save her unborn calf.

“A cow named Suzie was about to be loaded on a freighter bound for Venezuela when she turned around, ran back down the gangplank, and leaped into the river. Even though she was pregnant, or perhaps because she was pregnant, she managed to swim all the way across the river, eluding capture for several days. (Believe it or not, cows actually love swimming!) She was rescued by PETA and sent to a sanctuary for farmed animals.

When workers at a slaughterhouse in Massachusetts went on break, Emily the cow made a break of her own. She took a tremendous leap over a five-foot gate and escaped into the woods, surviving for several weeks in New England’s snowiest winter in a decade, cleverly refusing to touch the hay put out to lure her back to the slaughterhouse. When she was eventually caught by the owners of a nearby sanctuary, public outcry demanded that the slaughterhouse allow the sanctuary to buy her for one dollar. Today, Emily is living happily in Massachusetts, a testimony to the fact that eating meat means eating animals who don’t want to die.”

The Hidden Lives of Cows

Cattle experience positive emotions such as of Joy and pleasure as do many other animals, and those of us who have a dog or a cat are familiar with this aspect of an animal’s life. Rather like the spring lamb who gambols with sheer joy, cows it seems greet spring with similar exuberance. Jonathan Balcombe in his book pleasurable Kingdom says:

“Cattle when first let out into fields following a long winter confinement, tear about the field, kicking their legs into the air. They seem literally to be full of the joys of spring and look for all the world like excited toddlers released into the playground after hours sat behind their desks.”

What a delightful account but do bear in mind that the vast majority of cows are never released into fields, rather they spend their days instead tethered in sheds. Animal Rights: Factory Farming Cattle

There are many amazing stories that can lead us to the conclusion that cows are intelligent creatures, with emotions, feelings and needs similar to our own. Here is I quote Jeffery Massom.

After he and his family pass by cattle confined in a feed lot staring out at them – not grazing or doing what cows normally do, approaching the fence and staring out at the author and his family. He speculates:

“What I imagined was that the cows where wondering why they where there singled out for death. What kind of a world was it that allowed my family and me, cosy and safe in our new car to simply drive by, where as they and their families where destined to be driven away in a large truck and murdered for their meat?

One day far into the future people will marvel that we took the lives of these gentle and beautiful animals to satisfy our greed and gluttony. And one day a family much like mine will drive by and cows much like these will be grazing on a hillside, and those cows will be admired rather than eaten by humans.”

The above stories and information are included on my website Think Differently About Sheep where you can read more stories which show that cattle are sentient creatures

Sentience in Farm Animals: Cattle

Factory Farming

Read the shocking facts about factory farming. There are no graphics but the facts are horrifying nonetheless.
“Don’t be fooled by the dairy industry’s advertising of dairy products with cattle grazing peacefully in fields of buttercups, with the sun warming their backs and their calves by their sides, in most cases nothing could be further from the truth. Here is the grim reality behind your beef burger, glass of milk and pat of butter”
